Greetings from Cologne, or to be more precise, from the skies somewhere between Cologne and London.

I spent a hectic day in Germany yesterday, visiting Frankfurt for two meetings before speaking for a group of UK business people last night on the river in Cologne.

At least I managed to find an hour of downtime this morning before my flight, allowing me to take a quick 'scent' of Cologne before heading to lunch with an old friend and my flight home.

The highlight of Cologne has to be The Dom, the huge cathedral that dominates the skyline.

But I was also taken with the beauty of the Hohenzollem Bridge, where lovers affix padlocks to demonstrate their everlasting love before throwing the key in the Rhine. I've seen similar bridges in Prague but none as striking as this:

Andy Warhol's 'fifteen minutes of fame' society has become closer than ever as social media has produced a new generation of superstars who become global sensations overnight.

The latest is American housewife and Star Wars fan Candace Payne. Candace became an internet sensation last weekend when her Facebook Live video trying on a Chewbacca mask and laughing hysterically broke all records. To date her video has achieved over 150m views on Facebook alone, she has appeared on James Corden's US show, Good Morning America and visited the Facebook offices and much much more.

I've blogged my view of what businesses can learn from a networking perspective from Candace Payne's success (and the response from Kohl's, the store at which she bought her Chewbacca mask). You can click through to the blog from the right hand column (How to Embrace Your Champions).

In the meantime, if you've missed the Candace phenomenon and its aftermath, enjoy some of the highlights below.

Video Tip: Conversational Offers - Grab the Hand and Shake It

I visited Scotland last week to speak to the local meeting of the Professional Speaking Association. While there I stayed with my good friend Stuart Harris.

While we were chatting, Stuart shared a golden nugget that he uses when training call centre staff but I felt would be equally valuable for people looking to engage in interesting conversations when networking.

The A to Z of Networking: T is for...

Trust
Trust underpins so much of what makes networking work. You can't just meet someone and expect their help and support. Develop the relationship and earn their trust.

On the flip side, be willing to help others in small ways where you can to help you fast track your trust in them.

Thankful
Showing gratitude is such a simple thing to remember but so often forgotten. Let people see that you appreciate their support, in whatever form it comes and whatever the result.

T is also for...

Truth
Don't wear a mask. Be truly you with your network and they will be there for you in the long-term.
Technology
Technological advances have made maintaining and developing our networks so much easier. Don't ignore the help they offer us but, at the same time, don't expect tech to replace human interactions.
Taking your Time
Networking takes time. Are you in business or your career just for the next few weeks or for years and decades to come? Build a network now to support you in years to come.
Thought Provoking / Topical
Keep up to date with the news and current events to help you engage in conversation. And stay memorable with incisive conversation.
Turning up and Tuning In
Tune out all distractions and commit to the networks and meetings you arrange. Be there in both body and mind, giving your full focus to the event at hand.
Tribes
Networks are often formed of various tribes, or communities formed around common interest. Understand which are your tribes and interact with each as often as possible.
Tenacious
As already stated, networking doesn't necessarily produce results in the short-term and you will experience set-backs. Stick at it, be tenacious and successes will come.

Thanks to my own tribes for yet more great suggestions. T has been brought to you by Jo Simpson, Ian Steel, Gordon Tredgold, Ian Clague, Michael Birchmore, Roger Vanstone, Niels Brabandt, Nick Saalfeld, Shelley Jenner, Sean Foley, Isabella Brusati, Steve Houghton-Burnett, Vanessa Vallely, Jim Ewan, Brian Butcher, Rhiannon Evans, Mark Lee and Philip Williams.

Just for Fun: Looking back...

I came across this wonderful video recently, narrated by Sid James and showcasing London in, I guess, the 1960s.

It captures a different time and is fascinating not just from the perspective of how London and Londoners used to look but the insight it offers into a time when immigration was fresh and Supermarkets were the new kids on the block.

What people say...
"As head of PayPal UK's Women's Initiative Network, I met with Andy to discuss what he could bring to a WIN session.

Andy was extremely helpful, attentive to our network's objectives, goals and audience. Andy's 'It's Who Knows You' seminar was personalised to PayPal and delivered to a very responsive and engaged audience of over 60 delegates.

The feedback we received from members was overwhelmingly positive, making it one of the best sessions we had all year.

I would strongly recommend Andy to speak at your event and his positive demeanour makes him a pleasure to speak with. "
