Trust underpins so much of what makes networking work. You can't just meet someone and expect their help and support. Develop the relationship and earn their trust.
On the flip side, be willing to help others in small ways where you can to help you fast track your trust in them.
Showing gratitude is such a simple thing to remember but so often forgotten. Let people see that you appreciate their support, in whatever form it comes and whatever the result.
Truth
Don't wear a mask. Be truly you with your network and they will be there for you in the long-term.
Technology
Technological advances have made maintaining and developing our networks so much easier. Don't ignore the help they offer us but, at the same time, don't expect tech to replace human interactions.
Taking your Time
Networking takes time. Are you in business or your career just for the next few weeks or for years and decades to come? Build a network now to support you in years to come.
Thought Provoking / Topical
Keep up to date with the news and current events to help you engage in conversation. And stay memorable with incisive conversation.
Turning up and Tuning In
Tune out all distractions and commit to the networks and meetings you arrange. Be there in both body and mind, giving your full focus to the event at hand.
Tribes
Networks are often formed of various tribes, or communities formed around common interest. Understand which are your tribes and interact with each as often as possible.
Tenacious
As already stated, networking doesn't necessarily produce results in the short-term and you will experience set-backs. Stick at it, be tenacious and successes will come.
Thanks to my own tribes for yet more great suggestions.
