I always struggle to relate when people talk about separating their business and personal lives. I understand that many people still live in these two separate spaces and respect that it works for them. Having been operating in a completely different environment for so many years, it's something I struggle to advocate though.

It won't surprise you to know that I consider my network to be the most important and valuable 'asset' in my business. And over the years so many people have come into that network through shared business interests but crossed over to become among my closest friends.

In fact I've seen a huge swing in my social circles and lifestyle through friendships that have developed from business networking.

In fact a number of business networks have created what I call 'families', others call 'tribes'. The Professional Speaking Association is one, the close bonds I've formed with people through speaking to women's networks is another.

Perhaps the original 'family' from my business network stemmed from an online site that rose to prominence at the beginning of the century, before LinkedIn and Facebook. Ecademy.com, it's subset 'Black Star' and the subset of Black Star, 'Wild Card Pack' has produced some of the most important advice and support and strongest friendships for me over the last fifteen years or so.

This was brought home over Easter when I heard news that one of our 'family', Richard White, had passed away just before the Holiday.

Richard was the original 'gentle giant'. A quietly spoken man who focused on 'soft selling' for technical professionals, in which networking lay at the centre. He was a classic English Gentleman. I know it's a cliche to say this at times like this but I have genuinely never heard anyone say a bad word about Richard.

Richard wasn't one of my closest friends among our crowd but he was someone I liked, whose company I enjoyed and who I always liked catching up with. We did talk about collaborating but sadly that never happened.

His death has shocked so many people and it's a testament to the sheer positivity of breaking down the business v social barriers to see how people who met through business are grieving the loss of a friend and who are all still in touch, years after the network was sold on and who remain close friends with each other.

Video Tip: Why are you Denying your Network Pleasure?

We can only attain the full potential offered by our network if we're prepared to ask for help. Yet so often we fall short, worrying about being a burden on those around us.

This is a misplaced fear, as I explain in this clip.

Why We Keep on Failing to Ask for Help
Why We Keep on Failing to Ask for Help

The A to Z of Networking: R is for... (bonus Part 3!)

As promised, here's your bonus part 3 to 'R is for...', compiled by Tanya Wheway

Ready
As the song goes 'Ready, Willing and Able' (Alma Cogan early 60's)! Be ready to seize opportunities, ready to respond to a light knock on the door.  In my day the Girl Guide Motto was 'Always be prepared'... maybe it is still the same today.

Ripe
Timing is often very important.... Sometimes it is too soon and other times too late - have your eyes wide open to see things when they are ripe for the picking

R is also for...

Respect
Respect yourself and all those you come into contact with.  Courtesy and good manners, being a good listener, thoughtfulness and empathy are essential in building a good business relationship.  Self-respect is equally important; 'We teach people how to treat us', Phil McGraw.
Rituals, Ruts and Routines
The right type of rituals, in the right place at the right time can have a positive effect on our lives, but beware of ruts and routines; they can zap our energy, kill our creative juices and make us old before our time.
Reflection
Give yourself some time to reflect, to see things more clearly or get things into perspective, to clear your mind and work out priorities, to recognise when is a time to act or even a time to let go and move on.
Rust
Better to wear out than to rust out.... keep active physically and mentally - keep the little grey cells moving (as Poirot would say) and get the creative juices flowing
Risk / Rejection
Those who are prepared to take risks (albeit calculated risks) stand to gain much more:  'Those who do not go beyond their perceived limits should not complain about the mediocrity of their existence!'
Reward
Creative, thoughtful and effective networking can not only help you build your business, but it can lead to rewarding relationships, experiences and achievements.
Repeat and Referral Business
This can be the most cost and time effective way to build a business - a satisfied client becoming a loyal, long-term customer as well as being an ambassador for your products or services.
Records
Put efficient, effective record systems in place and see they are fully utilised
Rapid
Strike whilst the iron is hot!  Very fast responses can be extremely impressive and be the clincher.
Review
We live in a fast changing world and we regularly need to 'review the situation' - to do things a little or a lot differently if we are to continue getting good results.
Repetitive
To get results we sometimes need to ask more than once or repeat our message.
Recognition
Look for ways to compliment people and show you value you them and what they do.

Thanks to Tanya for all of your hard work and enthusiasm in putting together an excellent addition to our A-Z.
Just for Fun: Time Travelling Twins

It's been a while since I featured our friends from Improv Anywhere in this slot.

This is what happened when they put four sets of identical twins into a New York subway car...

What people say...
As head of PayPal UK's Women's Initiative Network, I met with Andy to discuss what he could bring to a WIN session.

Andy was extremely helpful, attentive to our network's objectives, goals and audience.

Andy's 'It's Who Knows You' seminar was personalised to PayPal and delivered to a very responsive and engaged audience of over 60 delegates. The feedback we received from members was overwhelmingly positive, making it one of the best sessions we had all year.

I would strongly recommend Andy to speak at your event and his positive demeanour makes him a pleasure to speak with.
