The summer holidays are now in full force and the challenge this year seems to be getting your timing right so that you capture all of the sun in the UK and escape abroad at the same time as the wind and rain hits us at home.

If you are going away this month, have a wonderful time and remember not to get sand in your laptop while you're reading this latest missive!

For those of us left at home, life and business goes on. It can be tempting to switch off and use the excuse that people are away to stop meeting people or picking up the phone. Unlike some other countries, the UK doesn't close down for a month. People go away typically for up to a fortnight over a two-three month period.

We're still here and working the rest of the time. But as business slows in some areas, it offers opportunities in others. I've been picking up the phone in the last week to people I haven't seen for a considerable period and reconnecting. It's already led to some great conversations and new opportunities.

Take advantage of the so-called down time and reestablish old contacts.

Just because a number of networking groups stop meeting for August, doesn't mean that you have to stop networking.

I was recently interviewed by Mike Major for his BizAdviser Masterclass, a wonderful collection of interviews with world-renowned business and marketing experts.

There's a PDF eBook of 120 pages and more than 4.5 hours of audio, so it's a huge amount of valuable information to help you grow your business.

Mike has kindly offered for you to have a copy of the BizAdviser Masterclass at no charge as a subscriber to 'Connecting is not Enough'.

One of the simplest pleasures of my job is the opportunity to meet and work alongside some amazing people. Many of them aren't well known outside their chosen field of expertise but occasionally I'll find myself sharing the stage with a true hero.

Among my highlights have been speaking immediately before former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize co-winner F W De Klerk and, more recently, England Rugby World Cup winning coach Sir Clive Woodward.

As a huge music fan, I must admit that I'm now looking forward even more to speaking at the Introbiz Expo in Cardiff in November with the news that I'm being followed on stage by a man who I've seen live on a number of occasions over the last twenty years, including being in the audience whose dancing registered a small earthquake in Finsbury Park in 1992!

I'm not sure that the ground will be moving quite as much as this when we speak but I'll be endeavouring to go One Step Beyond in Cardiff, and I'm sure Suggs will too!

Get your tickets here and join the dancing below.

Video Tip: "The Number One Lesson is..."

Successful entrepreneur Lara Morgan shares her thoughts on the importance of networking; what she has learned over her years building and selling a thriving global business.

The A to Z of Networking: J is for...

Join In / Just Do It
As many have stated before, it's Net'work'ing. You have to get involved, be proactive and participate if you want to get results.

If you visit networking groups, join them, commit to them and take responsibility for helping them to thrive. If you are building your own personal network, stay in touch, support them and help them to understand how they can support you.

Jobs
It's often stated that 70-80% of all jobs are filled by recommendation or referral. You will substantially increase your chances of winning the promotion or move that you crave if you develop a strong, diverse network who understand what you're looking for.

But don't wait until you're looking for a move to approach that network. Relationships need to be nurtured so that it feels natural to help you, not an imposition.

J is also for...

Joint Ventures
Strong networks throw up opportunities for collaboration that allow smaller businesses to punch above their weight and companies of all sizes to innovate and access new markets.
Judgement
Don't leave your networking to chance, you need to be constantly using your judgement. The best networkers know when to approach people, when to ask for help, when to offer advice and so much more.
Joking
Something else that requires judgement! Don't leave your sense of humour at home when networking but make sure that you use it appropriately.
Jitters
We all get them! Whether it's the confidence required to walk into a room full of strangers or plucking up the courage to ask someone for a referral, networking gives us the jitters and we have to be prepared to overcome them.
Jargon
Don't use it! Take the ten year old test...will a ten year old understand what you are trying to say and be able to repeat it back to you in their own words?
Justify your Investment
Networking takes up time, money and (most importantly but often forgotten), there is an opportunity cost. Understand what success looks like and focus your efforts.
Jottings
Take notes, whether in meetings, on the back of business cards or on your phone. If you make a promise to help someone, write it down so that you don't forget.

Just for Fun: Are Londoners Horrible?

I'm proud to be a Londoner and to come from one of the greatest cities on earth. But one of the perils of coming from a big city is that it can be so impersonal, people can be completely self-obsessed and, frankly, rude.

Or can they?

What people say...

Andy's style suited our company values perfectly as it is very much based around letting people learn at their own pace and be part of the sessions instead of just being presented to.

There was a mixture of experience, job roles, nationalities and seniority in the room and Andy ensured that everyone felt this training was directed at them, such is his way with words.
