Greetings from Chicago, where I'm delighted to have been invited to bring my brand of networking and referrals strategy to the US. Let's hope it's the start of a long and beautiful relationship.

I have a packed and varied schedule this week. Yesterday I delivered two talks to advisors at Northwestern Mutual, one of the largest financial advisors in North America. Tonight I'll be speaking to pupils and alumni at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Then on Saturday I'll be missing Charlton's famous victory over local rivals Millwall to join my colleagues at The National Speaking Association (NSA) to coach Special Olympians in presentation skills.

It may be a little cold here (-12C) but the welcome has been warm and I hope to return again soon.

Very early in my speaking career I heard sage advice from the successful motivational speaker Nigel Risner. Nigel asked whether we were focused on the applause or the results.

While it's lovely to get a great response to a presentation or workshop, feedback citing the impact of the ideas I've shared naturally has an even greater impact. And, for reasons that will become clear, this email, received recently, had more impact than most:

Dear Andy,
I am just sitting here with Ben Freedman from Ella and told him about my recent capacity building training delivered for UNHCR in Uganda. I was training refugees in economic literacy, social entrepreneurship etc.

As I had come to partake in your training session just a day before flying down to Uganda, I actually incorporated the essence of your teaching about networking in my training - and taught the refugee group how to source their immediate environment and relationships for experts and potential business partners. In a single home work evening they came up with 300 connections over 4 levels of connection. It helped them structure their marketplace and will guide them in the future in accessing new opportunities.

I just wanted to make sure to tell you this story. Happy to chat more about it in the future. Many thanks again for the great inspirational lesson.

All the best,

Freddy

Next Wednesday will see the latest edition of The Global Networking Show. Dr. Ivan Misner and I will be joined by Steven D'Souza and Diana Renner, the co-authors of the excellent new book, 'Not Knowing'.

The book re-frames the concept of Not Knowing, from being in a fearful place of weakness and ignorance, moving to something we must engage with personally. It introduces us to a new paradigm, where Not Knowing becomes an exciting opportunity - we are no longer limited by what we already know and our habitual reactions to things that life throws at us, so that deeper knowing can emerge.

How does Not Knowing help us network and engage with others more effectively? Join the conversation and find out. Otherwise, you'll never know!

Video Tip: Look for People Like You

During one of my presentations at Northwestern Mutual yesterday the same theme came up several times.

It's a simple theme and simple advice. But that doesn't mean that a reminder isn't sometimes helpful!

Interviewing the Experts: I Like Laughter

A break from the usual format this week. I saw this video last week and fell in love with it. It has so much to offer, whether from the personal perspective ("you don't have to be a comedian to deliver a punchline") or professional ("Now I'm not looking to take, I'm looking for an opportunity to give").

The core message throughout, hones in with a central message of networking. What can you do for other people?

Just for Fun: Tower Tales

History can be fun! Pour yourself a large drink of your choice, sit back and enjoy the tour given by this Beefeater (Yeoman Warden) at the Tower of London. He definitely has an alternative career on the comedy circuit if he ever needs a change.
