I received some very sad, if not unexpected, news last week.

A remarkable woman, Hannah Foxley, who I met at a networking event a couple of years ago and who became a friend, finally succumbed to the cancer that had plagued her life for a long time.

Hannah was a tireless ambassador for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and had just posed naked (post mastectomy) for Cosmopolitan Magazine when she received the news that she now had cancer of her liver and kidneys.

I received the news of Hannah's passing while sat in the car park of the Isabel Hospice, which services the area in which Hannah lived for most of her life. I was given a tour of the hospice and was told that 86% of their patients over the last twelve months have been cancer sufferers.

I'm always happy to support charities where I can, particularly local ones, but the timing of the news and this statistic meant that the talk I'm giving on behalf of Isabel Hospice suddenly took on a lot more meaning.

I'll be delivering a short presentation on behalf of the hospice on 5th June at Lussman's Fish and Grill in Hertford. Full details and booking information can be found at www.the1stthursday.com. The talk will be focused on 'How NOT to get Referrals' but my thoughts will be with Hannah.

If you are in the area and can come along to support this event it would be wonderful to see you there.

We've had a few weeks off but the Global Networking Show is back at the end of this month and we have two fantastic guests and an excellent topic.

Dr. Ivan Misner and I will be joined by Sam Horn from the US and Andy Bounds from the UK to discuss How to Make Your Message Stick. If you can't communicate in a way that enables people to support your goals, whether for your career or for your business, you'll struggle to make your networking effective.

The show takes place on 29th May at 4.30pm BST. Full details and the relevant links can be found here

Video Tip: Are you curious enough?

In my second networking tip from my recent visit to Siberia, I ask a simple question. Which is something we should all do naturally as part of our networking.

Interviewing the Experts: Can you build relationships using Skype?

I was recently introduced to Roger Courville, a speaker based in Portland, Oregon. Obviously, being based on different sides of the world, it's difficult for Roger and I to meet in person, at least in the short term.

Instead, earlier this week Roger and I made our acquaintance on Skype. As Roger specialises in delivering presentations virtually to audiences all over the world, I asked him if you can effectively use technology such as Skype or Google Hangouts to develop relationships.

What people say...
"At Aquilant Specialist Healthcare Services we engaged Andy to speak at our Divisional conference. As you would expect with someone of his experience Andy immediately got to work and engaged the audience around the topic of networking with some of our key stakeholders groups.

The keynote speech was tailored to our needs and Andy gave additional value in spending the day in our break out groups to ensure the messages were relevant to each team. Feedback from all of the teams was positive and we will no doubt continue to explore how we can leverage the network of each of our sales team."
