Top Tip: Understanding what networks can offer you

in conversationI am regularly asked how people can select the best networking groups, or online networks for them. Faced with an array of opportunities, many people settle for just the ones they are invited to. And that often fails to lead to a successful result.

Networks, whether online or face to face, can offer you a range of benefits but you need to be focused on the right one for you. Set yourself an initial goal and focus your attention on what you need to do to generate that return. As you start to reap the rewards you can start to look to see how else you can benefit from your membership.

Networks can help you to become better known, better equipped or better connected, so that focus should be on finding networks which will help you build your profile, gain market knowledge, self development or peer support or to generate referrals

Video: Putting your networking strategy together

I was recently interviewed live on Google+ and on YouTube by 'The How2Girl' Carol Dodsley

Carol asked me about the pitfalls of networking without a clear plan, how to select the right network for you, how to help people understand clearly what you do and much, much more.

You can watch the full interview below.

Interviewing the Experts: Lesley Everett

Continuing my series of interviews with experts and successful business people about networking, I spoke with Lesley Everett about the importance of managing your personal brand and your reputation.

Lesley is an international speaker and successful author on the subject and someone I've quoted in both '...and Death Came Third!' and in 'Recommended'.

Just for Fun: Welcome to London

My home city of London has recently seen the opening of Western Europe's tallest building, The Shard. And the views from the top are simply astounding as this amazing 360 view by photographer Will Pearson spectacularly demonstrates.

What people say
"We had not previously used a speaker that is not involved with our sector (UK boarding schools) before so it was a bit of a risk, having heard speakers at other conferences whose material doesn't relate well to our sector.

However, I explained this to Andy who was very generous with his time and we had a meeting together, several phone calls and he spent time on the phone talking to a couple of key people in our sector to ensure he did his research.

I was delighted with his presentation and within about 10 minutes I could feel the positive reaction of the audience (about 120). Andy's session lasted for an hour and a half and involved the audience doing some discussions in small groups.

The feedback was excellent during the day, as has been the feedback from the forms we gave out. Almost everyone gave top marks. Several people were surprised to find out that Andy didn't work in our sector as he related his knowledge so well and confidently, which was key to getting the audience to buy into his advice.

I can thoroughly recommend Andy. He is true professional and an excellent conference speaker and trainer."
