Maryland Broadband Mapping Initiative Update
The semiannual data delivery to the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) is in the final stages. CGIS improved the quality of the Community Anchor Institution (CAI) dataset by incorporating physician practice data obtained from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and by working closely with the Assistant State Superintendent for Libraries on a broadband survey for all Maryland Public Libraries. Along with updating Baltimore City's CAI locations, we gathered contact information for targeted CAI facilities in preparation for an online verification tool that will enable CAIs to self-report. The Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC) at Salisbury University collected the state's broadband provider data. ESRGC is currently processing CAI, speedtest, and provider data for submission to NTIA before April 1.
News from the Student Intern Desk
Two hard-working TU students are gaining technical and professional experience at CGIS on some interesting projects
Zach Bornstein is creating a GIS database for TU's Dr. Bob Wall that represents a pre-Columbian Amer-Indian archeological site in Anne Arundel County. Dr. Wall and his team have unearthed thousands of artifacts at the site, and they maintain detailed records of artifact locations, including their depth. CGIS is supporting Zach's effort to create and geospatially place GIS features from Dr. Wall's records. The GIS will present the data in 3D and will incorporate aerial photography, LiDAR high-resolution elevation data, hydrology, soils, parcel ownership, and other data layers to provide context for the site. Zach is also using Trimble SketchUp to create a 3D model of a nearby elevated roadway to include in the database. In addition to providing Dr. Wall with a sophisticated spatial database in which to maintain the data, the GIS will be a very useful tool for visualizing the former settlement. (Mentor, David Sides)
Kerry McMahon is developing a Google Earth Virtual Tour for Baltimore County Economic Development to highlight certain county properties that are available for re-development. Kerry is creating 3D models of the selected properties/buildings in SketchUp. The models will then be imported into Google Earth to create flyover videos of the properties.

If you Missed TUgis 2013...
You missed more than 40 presentations, two bright lightning sessions that covered 11 different projects, 27 fabulous exhibitors, plus the first chance ever to meet members of the land surveying community at TUgis. You also lost the chance to network with more than 500 of your colleagues! But there's always next year--TUgis 2014 happens on Tuesday, March 18. We hope to see you there! In the meantime, take a look at the slides from Learon Dalby's TUgis 2013 keynote presentation.
