Meet CGIS
Christina Bell entered the GIS field because of an interest in cartography and environmental issues. In 2012 her GIS career and her civic service as an election judge intersected when her assigned polling site had to serve two precincts. To lower the number of voters waiting in the wrong lines, Christina helped them find their addresses on a map.

CGIS honors GIS Day with state agency and university outreach, and by helping young students use maps to understand the depth of a humanitarian crisis half the world away.

GIS Day is the annual international salute to geospatial technology and its power to transform and improve our lives. This year CGIS participated in Maryland State Highway Administration's annual GIS Day expo, and also conducted a GIS Data Awareness Seminar for Towson University faculty. Building on a valuable middle-school partnership, CGIS invited 6th grade students from the Crossroads School in Baltimore to the College of Liberal Arts building on campus for GIS activities that helped the students connect the what and the where of the plight of young male Sudanese refugees displaced by war. The exercises fit well not only with a Crossroads School goal to integrate instruction and hands-on projects, but also with a STEM Standard of Practice to "apply technology appropriately."

Focus in emergency management during Hurricane Sandy

In the July 2012 issue of Geospatial Connection we talked about the ways CGIS helps Maryland's Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) deploy GIS for public safety. In late October, as Hurricane Sandy raged along the Atlantic Coast, CGIS worked closely with Maryland's Geographic Information Officer (GIO) and his staff to support MEMA before, during, and after the Category 1 hurricane that eventually affected 24 states. Ten CGIS staff members served as needed throughout the event to update the power outage maps, add additional map services, re-configure the map services on MD iMap to ensure that OSPREY services remained available, and consult on IT issues. Read more about our GIS use for public safety here.
