Education in the media

Education affects every single one of us at some stage in our lives. It is no wonder that the media have picked up on it as being of interest to many. 'The Educators' on Radio 4 is a series of interviews, with Sarah Montague talking to a variety of people involved in education. So far she has talked to the Head of Eton, Tony Little, and Ken Robinson, most well-known for his TED talk on the importance of teaching creativity. These programmes can be heard on iPlayer; it's interesting to be able to hear a variety of opinions and visions on education.

Television has its 'Educating...' series. The next one is 'Educating the East End' on Channel 4. The students in these programmes are always the stars and The Guardian tells us this programme "...will change the perception of London Teenagers". I, for one, will be watching in spite of my mixed feelings about television cameras in the classroom.

What do you think about how the teaching profession is portrayed in these programmes?

It's OK Being Me summer camp

Our third annual summer camp took place in Taipei, Taiwan this year. Twenty Chinese teenagers aged 11 - 17 experienced a wide variety of activities. We spent every morning exploring principles of communication, teamwork and emotional maturity, and then each afternoon we went on various outings. Here is a picture of the group in the centre of Taipei.

The residential format combined with structured activities has proved to be an effective way to build self-awareness, co-operation and friendship. We have all learned so much and we hope to have the opportunity to replicate summer camps in other countries before long.

New national curriculum

This term sees the introduction of a new curriculum in computing. All children from the age of five will be required to learn programming or "coding" as it is referred to. In the words of the curriculum document, the aim is to "ensure that all pupils can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science". Whilst clearly seeing the need for this in today's world so as to equip our young people with essential skills, wouldn't it be fantastic if there was a new national curriculum for emotional literacy, "to ensure that all pupils can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of social and emotional well-being"?

If you are interested in being at the forefront of providing this type of education for your students and giving them the essential life skills of emotional literacy, leading to improved behaviour, increased empathy, higher self esteem and improved chances for success in life, please get in touch with us and we will help you find the right scheme of work for you, and/or discuss coming to your setting to deliver some training for staff.
