Welcome

May has arrived! Named after the Roman goddess of fertility, Maia, (also the name of my youngest daughter!), it is a time when flowers emerge and crops begin to sprout. It is a time to notice the new growth around us and rejoice in the approach of Summer.

Of course there are dark times and difficulties in our lives, AND there are joyous times. Hopefully May will also bring us some sunshine after what feels like a long, grey and wet winter.

Train with MO

It is always a pleasure to meet colleagues who share our passion for enriching the lives of our young people, and equipping them with skills for success in life.

Last week we met some fellow trainers, who work with staff and young people to address issues of sexual health, risk and resilience, mental health and use of alcohol and other drugs. MO Training and Consultancy offer training in the workplace and in schools, as well as bespoke training events. They have a great website where you can find out more about them and what they can offer you: www.trainwithmo.co.uk

The key to success? Grit

Another interesting TED talk where Angela Lee Duckworth talks about how her observations in the classroom led to her conclusions about what it is that make students successful.

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, she took a job teaching maths to seventh graders in a New York school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success: click here to watch.

The UK's first female Chief Constable, Pauline Clare, will give Cumbrian business leaders an insight into the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership, in-cumbria.com reports.

Pauline Clare's masterclass explores two approaches to leadership - transformational leadership and the role of emotional intelligence - drawing upon her wealth of knowledge and experience as the UK's first female Chief Constable and now a respected business and development coach.

She said: "Emotional intelligence is not about being 'touch feely' in management; it enables leaders to listen effectively, to demonstrate empathy and to challenge the way that people are thinking about issues within business. It also enables people to tap into data from emotions in ourselves and others, to make better decisions and get the best out of the people who work for us."

"Emotional intelligence is a vital element within the competency framework for managers and leaders yet it is often overlooked or misunderstood. Ultimately it is another vital tool in helping people to manage more effectively, and enhance their management style."
