Welcome

"You know there is a problem with the education system when you realise that out of the 3 R's only one begins with an 'R.'"
                                                        Dennis Miller, US comedian

Humour is infectious. It lightens burdens, inspires hope, connects us to others, increases our insight, keeps us grounded, focused, alert, and happy. Laughter is a universal language that stimulates both sides of the brain. It allows us to get messages quicker and remember them longer. We all learn more when we're having fun.

Good luck with spreading your sense of humour as we enter the exam season!

Training workshop in London on 14 June

"This day gave me really useful tools and techniques."

We hope you can join us in London on Friday 14 June for Emotional Well-being - a vital key to learning

This day is designed for teachers and TAs. We will explore the neuroscience that supports the importance of Emotional Well-being as preparation for effective learning, and learn skills and techniques that will enable you to bring Emotional Well-being into the classroom.

"Helped me to consolidate current practice and highlight direction as a practitioner within my school."

Mindfulness in Schools

I recently attended the Mindfulness in Schools National Conference where we were lucky to have Jon Kabat-Zinn who, having pioneered the use of Mindfulness in medicine and stress reduction in the US, has initiated a worldwide interest in this ancient meditative technique.

More and more schools are discovering the importance of teaching Mindfulness to their students and teachers. Reduced stress, better sleep, more focused attention, decreased anxiety, lower blood pressure, improved mood and better performance are some the benefitsIncreasingly evidence shows the broad range of positive outcomes of daily Mindfulness practice, and NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) now recommend it as a preferred treatment for depression.

The most powerful and inspiring presentation of the day came from the students themselves. From various schools, they talked passionately about their experiences of learning and practising Mindfulness, and the benefits this has brought to their lives.

Fantastic!                                                                      Ruthie Alexander-Morgan

Let the trainer take the strain

Now that schools are becoming more autonomous, they are increasingly working in isolation. While this may have its benefits, it can sometimes be refreshing and energizing to invite someone else in to take the strain.

One of the things we enjoy most at VisionWorks is Teacher Training; we have seen how embedding the use of Emotional Well-being in schools benefits both staff and students.  Consequently we offer a variety of training possibilities.

Take a look at this:

  • Induction training for teachers using VisionWorks programmes - 2 hours
  • INSET training for teachers using VisionWorks programmes - 1 day
  • School INSET session enabling staff to see the benefits of teaching wellbeing in school - Twilight, half a day or whole day
  • Bespoke training for teachers. Every school is different; together we can explore solutions to an issue that is particular to your school - duration varies
  • NQTs and trainee teachersAn introduction to the many benefits of using emotional well-being principles in teaching - Twilight, half a day or whole day.

There is nothing we will not do!

Whole Education Conference. . .

. . . was another event that I attended recently in London with many other colleagues involved in innovative practice in education: www.wholeeducation.org

As ever it was so inspiring to hear of schools around the country who
have made dramatic changes in the behaviour, relationships, confidence, and school ethos through introducing different programmes and projects, and of course through visionary leadership.

The closing speech and conversation was given by Professor Tim Brighouse who besides being very funny and irreverent, also spoke with passion about the need for courage and confidence amongst teachers. But his key message, which was echoed throughout the day by other speakers, was the need for outstanding CPD.                                                                                                                                                               Ruthie Alexander-Morgan
