How do you make data pay?
by Adam Gittins, HTS Ag
How do you make data pay? The data will lead you to
management decisions that make a difference to your
bottom line.
What hybrid should I plant? That
decision is made each year on my farm by looking
over the performance of the ones I have planted on
each farm. I run a number of side by side trials
with different hybrids, so I have a good idea of how
each performs on different types of soils, etc.
Let me show you a couple of maps of this
year’s data, to illustrate why this is so important.

Tips From Tech: Pre-Season Application
Checklist |
|
|
by Sam Worley, Ag Leader
By now, planting operations should be
wrapping up in most locales in the United
States so it’s time to turn to another field
operation, spraying. The following list is a
good starting point for getting your machine
field ready but think safety first. Do you
have an adequate supply of gloves, goggles,
particle masks and chemical jump suits?
Mechanical Inspection:
- Clean or replace tank and boom
sprayers as needed.
- Inspect hoses, clamps and fittings
for wear or leaks. Repair or replace as
needed.
- Test nozzle flow rate and compare to
new. Replace any tip that has 10% or
more error from new nozzle flow rate. If
two or more nozzles fail, replace the
whole set.
- Inspect boom suspension and general
mechanical condition.
- Repair as needed. Automated boom
height control can’t perform well if
boom mechanicals are worn.
- Inspect the flow meter. Clean, test
or replace as needed.

Sun Safety and Protecting Yourself from
the Damaging Effects |
|
|
by Paula Schnack
With planting season in full swing it is the
time of year that people, especially
farmers, spend time outside from sun up to
sun down. That sun can have some lasting
effects on us due to the damaging UVA & UVB
rays. That damage is caused by the radiation
that the sun gives off and when it
penetrates our skin it can cause damage in
the form of wrinkles, a tan, and even skin
cancer. A tan is said to be the skins way of
forming a barrier to the sun, but it is in
fact a sign of damage already done.

Grain Spoilage Risk Due to Headspace
Condensation |
|
|
used with permission from OPI-Integris by
Chandra B. Singh, Ph.D., P.Eng. and Ron Larson,
M.Sc.
Spoilage
Risk
Grain dried to safe storage
moisture levels and stored in the grain bin
may still spoil due headspace condensation.
The moisture condensed on the inner side of
the bin roof drops on the grain surface
below the headspace and grain absorbs this
moisture which leads to mold growth and
spoilage with potential risk of mycotoxins
development.
