Selecting the Right Fan for In-Bin Natural
Air Drying System |
|
|
used with permission from OPI-Integris by
Chandra B. Singh, Ph.D., P.Eng. and Ron
Larson, M.Sc.
Airflow
rate is the most significant factor in
achieving effective, timely, and successful
natural air drying results. How much air a
fan can deliver depends not only on the fan
(type and size) but also on the bin
diameter, grain type (size and shape), grain
depth, loading practice, bin capacity, grain
packing factor, and percentage of fines,
broken, and foreign material. For natural
air drying, the minimum recommended airflow
rate is approximately 1.0 cfm/bu.
Often, improperly selected/undersized fan
delivering less than desired airflow rate
leads to the failure of natural air drying.
Therefore, it is important to select the
right fan that can deliver the desired
airflow rate. Increasing the fan horsepower
doesn’t always result in increased airflow.
Thus, properly selected fan will result in
significant energy savings.

Tech Tip: Implement Turn On and Turn Off Look-Aheads |
|
|
by Nate Lincoln, HTS Ag
As we come into spring, an important and
simple thing to check would be your turn on
and turn off look-aheads.
There are many things to take into
consideration. Have you switched tractors,
planters, sprayers...etc? Have you changed
your measurements within the display?
Measurements are not universal for all
equipment. Axle to hitch pin, axle to three
point, axle to receiver, and the hitch point
to application point are all measurements
that contribute to accurate turn on and turn
off look-aheads.
