How Do You Make Data Pay?
by
Adam Gittins, HTS Ag
How do you make data pay? The data will lead you to
management decisions that make a difference to your
bottom line.
What hybrid should I plant? That decision is made
each year on my farm by looking over the performance
of the ones I have planted on each farm. I run a
number of side by side trials with different
hybrids, so I have a good idea of how each performs
on different types of soils, etc.
Let me show you a couple of maps of this year’s
data, to illustrate why this is so important.

Managing Stored Grain during Summer Holding
used with permission from OPI-Integris
In our previous article, the discussion
described the approaches for grain
management and fan
operation during spring. This current
article is the continuation of the
approaches followed during the spring
months. If long term grain storage is your
goal, healthy (high test weight) and clean
grain with in-bin natural air drying ability
(prior to winter) should be filled into the
grain bin. The bin should be cored and
leveled to remove broken kernels and fines
in order to provide a uniform airflow rate.
Peaked grain with broken kernels and fines
may reduce/restrict the airflow rate through
the central core causing non-uniformity in
grain moisture and temperature.

Tired Of Down Time From Not Having Enough
Satellites? |
|
|
by
Adam Gittins, HTS Ag
I
spent some time today working with my new
Geosteer on my tractor, and just happened to
be looking at the GPS diagnostics screen
when it dropped down to 4 available
satellites and the PDOP shot to 50! For
those of you that aren’t familiar with these
numbers, we try to have no less than 5
satellites for steering, and would like to
see the PDOP (Positional Dilution of
Precision) at or below 5. Our team here at
HTS Ag also started taking several calls at
the same time with customers having problems
with their systems not getting signal. This
got me thinking about what I could do to
make the system perform better, and Glonass
came to mind.

For those of you running Omnistar on your
Paradyme or Geosteer systems, Ag Leader has
made a very nice improvement. In the latest
firmware, they have added “Omnistar Flex to
WAAS” to the list of available Precision
Settings. This has been available for RTK
for a few years and will work the same with
Omnistar.
This setting will allow your GPS receiver to
automatically start using WAAS if the
Omnistar connection is momentarily lost.
This will allow your autosteer to remain
engaged and keep steering for a number of
minutes even if the Omnistar signal is lost.
No more immediately losing steering and
having to wait up to 20 minutes for Omnistar
to re-converge. You will notice a yellow
exclamation mark on the GPS information icon
on the top right of the display when the
system goes into flex mode. The GPS icon
will go back to all green when Omnistar has
re-converged. The longer you were converged
on Omnistar before losing the signal, the
longer you will be able to run in flex mode.
If Omnistar doesn’t come back within a
number of minutes, you may still lose
autosteer until it re-converges.
I recommend that everyone change their
Precision Setting from Omnistar only to
Omnistar Flex to WAAS as it has greatly
improved the reliability of the Omnistar
signal. To change this Precision Setting, go
into the Paradyme/Geosteer menu and select
GPS, then Precision Settings, then choose
Omnistar Flex to WAAS from the list and hit
apply. This should change your Precision
Setting from Omnistar to Omnistar Flex to
WAAS.
