Down on the Farm
Share our Love of Agriculture
It was only a matter of time before the farm-to-table movement took visitors beyond the restaurant experience and onto the farm itself. More and more of Calvert County's farmers and watermen are welcoming the public to 'visit them where they live' and enjoy the freshness of their harvests literally ... at ground level.
What better way to welcome spring than by getting outside with your family to visit the farmers markets, farms, wineries or seafood houses that dot the beautiful country side nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River. Plan your visit to Calvert County and meander through a quaint lavender field or sip wine in an orchard or pick strawberries from the patch.
May is National Strawberry Month after all, and this year's warmer temperatures are promising a bumper crop of the juicy delights. Did you know that strawberries are actually a member of the rose family? But instead of thorns, they are the only fruit with seeds on the outside. Don't miss a chance to pick the first fruit to ripen in the spring at one of Calvert County two pick-your-own farms. Swann Farms7740 Swan Lane, Owings
Mulberry Hill Farm1605 Solomons Island Road, Huntingtown If you are looking for more than strawberries, look no further for a variety of fresh produce, meats, dairy, flowers and herbs than at Calvert County's roadside stands and farmers markets. Eating fresh is made easy every spring when Calvert County's four weekly farmers markets return the first week in May on the following schedule: - Tuesdays in Prince Frederick in the Calvert Memorial Hospital parking lot, 3-7 p.m., May 9-Nov. 21
- Thursdays in Solomons at the Riverwalk north of Solomons Pavilion, 3-6:30 p.m., May 11-Nov. 16
- Fridays in North Beach between 5th and 7th streets and Bay Avenue, 6-9 p.m., May 5-Oct. 6 (includes entertainment and car shows)
- Saturdays in Barstow at the Calvert County Fairgrounds on Route 231, 7:30 a.m.-noon, May 7-Nov. 19 (includes flea market)

Heritage Days
Rooted Deep in Tradition
Calvert County was built on the backs of farmers and watermen. It is a rich and proud history celebrated at two upcoming events. Learn why history is hip, and fun, in Calvert County. Plan to attend the Solomons Maritime Festival May 6 at the Calvert Marine Museum. Come taste traditional foods, learn how to pick crabs and shuck oysters like the pros, enjoy local gospel and old-time music, see Chesapeake Bay retrievers in action, watch model boats skim the waters of the boat basin, talk with traditional crafts people as they demonstrate their skills, or take a free 30-minute cruise on the Wm. B. Tennison. The event includes exhibits from more than 30 collectors of antique and classic boats, and vintage marine outboard and inboard engines.
While you're there, be sure to check out the Lore Oyster House, a restored seafood packing house. J.C. Lore and Sons of Solomons was one of the largest and most successful seafood packing companies in Southern Maryland. Founded by Joseph C. Lore Sr. at the height of the Chesapeake oyster industry in 1888, the company specialized in packing and shipping Patuxent River fish, crabs and oysters. Now the designated National Historic Landmark offers exhibits that explore all aspects of oyster processing.
The next day, come out to Heritage Farm Day at Biscoe Gray Farm. This 196-acre gem is a former farm that continues to teach us with every archaeological dig. Learn how our ancestors have lived with the land along the historic Battle Creek since the mid-1700s. You are invited to join local naturalists May 7 for history walks, nature talks and more, including an equestrian club offering beginner trail rides and the Garden Club selling herbs and native plants.
Through the years, many Calvert County's sons and daughters left their families on the farms and waterways to protect our country when it mattered most. For the sixth year in row, the town of Chesapeake Beach is hosting a weekend of activities and ceremonies to highlight and honor Calvert County fallen heroes during a Memorial Day weekend Stars and Stripes Festival. You won't want to miss the speakers, the concerts, the picnics or seeing this beautiful waterside town paint itself red, white and blue to pay homage to our county's men and women in uniform.
