Board Honors Graduates of First Citizens Academy
The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners presented certificates of completion to the graduates of the first Calvert County Citizens Academy. The academy offered 21 residents an in-depth look at how Calvert County Government works through an informative, fast-paced and free seven-week program.
County department directors and employees shared their departments' missions and provided unique insight into the day-to-day operations of Calvert County Government for three hours every Thursday evening from Jan. 12 to Feb. 23. Participants also got behind-the-scenes tours of the Calvert Marine Museum, the Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center and the Calvert County Detention Center.

Officials Break Ground on Lusby Senior Living Community
The Board of County Commissioners recently attended a groundbreaking for Southern Pines II, a new senior living community being built in Lusby.
"This beautiful new facility will add 67 much needed affordable housing units specifically for Calvert County's maturing citizens," explained Commissioner President Tom Hejl. "We greatly appreciate this nearly $15 million investment in our community."
The county donated the 8.7 acres, valued at an estimated $740,000, on which Southern Pines II will be built. Funding for the project will come from state funding obtained from long-term bonds and grants and investor equity.

Remembering Annette Funn
 The Board of County Commissioners recently honored the memory of local resident Annette Funn and celebrated her years of dedication and volunteer service to the citizens of Calvert County.
Annette had a passion for helping people and was involved in many community organizations, serving as the chair and vice chair of the Calvert County Commission for Women, co-president and long-time board member of the Calvert County League of Women Voters and as a board member of the League of Women Voters of Maryland.
Her years as a teacher, public speaker, mentor and activist made her an invaluable asset to county citizens and her commitment to serving people will be remembered and cherished by all those who knew her.

Survey to Take Pulse of Local Business
The Calvert County Department of Economic Development is seeking input from county businesses through the 2017 Business Survey. Data collected will be used to support local businesses, enhance the programs and services that are currently available and report trends to the county commissioners.

Rockfish Trophy Season Opens

New Textile Containers Make Donating Easy
The Calvert County Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division added nine textile donation/collection containers throughout the county to provide more convenience for residents.
In addition, Mid-Atlantic Textile Company, the county's textile recycling contractor, donated $900 to the Calvert County Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program and placed D.A.R.E emblems on the new containers and existing containers at the county's seven customer convenience centers to help raise awareness of drug abuse and prevention. Speaking of recycling ... The Calvert County Solid Waste Division is still accepting applications for its second annual recycling awards program to recognize individuals, businesses, government agencies and more for recycling ingenuity and results.
