Calvert County Rocks!
Fishing for Fun Ideas
in April?
Excitement is in the air at Calvert County's many marinas as locals and visitors alike prepare their tackle boxes for the opening of trophy rockfish season this month. Legendary stories of strength and endurance follow those who reel in the mighty rockfish, also known as striped bass.
Calvert County boasts the largest charter boat fleet on the Chesapeake Bay and any angler worth his or her salt will tell you there is nothing like hearing the docks come alive in the pre-dawn hours as captains and crews prepare their fishing rigs for the day's big haul. The trophy season runs April 15 - May 15 with a catch limit of one fish per person per day, 35 inches or larger.
On May 15, a two-fish limit begins for smaller fish, and this year the season is extended through Dec. 20. Book your charter now to reel in the Maryland state fish and a prized delicacy of the region.
Not sure how to get started? First, let the Calvert County 2017 Visitors Guide help you put a perfect fishing weekend trip
together. Second, plan to attend the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association Southern Maryland Chapter's Southern Maryland Fishing Fair. It promises fun for all ages April 1-2, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. More than 100 vendors will be on hand at the Solomons Volunteer Fire Department, located 13150 H.G. Trueman Road, to show novices the ropes and offer experts the very latest in rods, reels, lures, umbrellas, tackle, paintings, crafts and more. Admission is $4 and children 12 and younger are free.
