Women's History in Calvert County:
One Marriage's Lasting Legacy
Mary Marvin Breckinridge (1905-2002) was the freelance photojournalist who took the first pictures of a London air-raid shelter when World War II began. She went on to become the first female broadcaster in Europe for CBS.

Breckinridge married U.S. diplomat Jefferson Patterson and began traveling with him throughout Europe. The couple eventually retired to the shores of the Patuxent River in Calvert County.

In 1983, Mary Patterson donated to the public one of the most important archaeological properties in the Chesapeake Bay region. Her gift of the Point Farm Estate in St. Leonard remains the largest land gift bestowed in Maryland. That gift created the Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM).

Today, JPPM's 560 scenic acres provide visitors with miles of trails, a visitor center, educational programs and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. Visit online to learn more about everything the Pattersons and JPPM have to offer and plan your visit today.

Calvert Library offers complimentary or reduced-price passes to more than 20 participating community partners, including museums, wineries, parks and more. All you need is a library card!

The Perfect Union of Parks

For better or worse, the big winter chill is behind us and while it's not quite bathing suit weather, it is still a great time to shake off the cabin fever and take the family outside. March 30 is Take a Walk in the Park Day after all, but we are confident that you'll enjoy the beauty of Calvert County's nature parks every day.

Called "peerless examples of ecological diversity," Calvert County's nature parks let you marry your curiosity with your outdoor enthusiasm. Each park offers a unique dowry of history and puts natural wonders on display with dignified flair.
Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary has 100 acres of one of the northernmost stands of bald cypress trees in the United States. Meander boardwalks throughout the breathtaking open-air swamp.

Flag Ponds Nature Park has 500 acres of natural area on the Chesapeake Bay from beach to upland. You're sure to find fossils and sharks teeth along this popular beach.

Kings Landing Park has more than 265 acres of natural area on the Patuxent River including 4,000 feet of river shoreline and 50 acres of marshland.

Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm is a living laboratory to explore, understand and experience Calvert County's agricultural practices and lifestyles throughout its history--from Native American settlements to small-scale colonial farming.

Brick Wood Fired Bistro

It is no surprise to the residents of Calvert County that Brick Wood Fired Bistro in Prince Frederick came in second in a recent
list of the top 15 best restaurants in Maryland. People are driving from all over the state to taste wood-fired pizza made with ingredients like prosciutto and caramelized onions. But there is so much more to Brick Wood Fired Bistro's menu than pizza. This modern-American wood-fired restaurant also serves upscale pub food, house cut steaks and an array of unique appetizers. The bartenders take equal pride in the bar menus featuring wine on tap and locally sourced beer, the area's premier bourbon list and made-from-scratch cocktails furnished with herbs from their rooftop garden.

Check out Brick's all new Iron Skillet Pancake, served with house-made marshmallow fluff and bourbon caramelized bananas. You can try this dish and more from an all new Sunday brunch menu served each week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring bottomless Bloody Marys and mimosas and an ever-changing a la carte menu.
