Calvert County Animal Shelter Named in Honor of Linda Kelley

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners joined the community in mourning the passing of Owings resident and former County Commissioner Linda Kelley (1942 - 2017). She was an icon, a force and a woman of deep compassion and conviction who cared deeply for our county and everyone who lived here.

The board announced Jan. 24, 2017 it will dedicate the new Prince Frederick animal shelter in honor of Kelley. The Owings resident is widely known as a vocal and committed animal rights advocate. The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter will save all healthy and treatable animals, even when the shelter is full. Only terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety will be euthanized.

"Linda Kelley led Calvert County's charge for many years to build its own animal shelter and end its investment in the regional tri-county shelter," said Board President Tom Hejl. "This is her dream, she helped bring it to reality and her name belongs on it."

Buckler Named 2016 Calvert County Employee of the Year

Ruthie Buckler is pictured here holding her award with Calvert County Administrator Terry Shannon and the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners.

Department of Economic Development Program Specialist Ruthie Buckler was named the 2016 Employee of the Year during the Calvert County Government Annual Employee Service Awards ceremony.

Ruthie was chosen after receiving the Employee of the Month Award last May for spending many hours of personal time researching, summarizing and giving employees a means to express their thoughts and concerns about health insurance benefits and potential changes.

"She has gone above and beyond her normal duties to advocate for Calvert County employees, having served as chairwoman for the Calvert County Employee Representative Committee for many years," said Calvert County Administrator Terry Shannon. "When Ruthie learned of proposed health insurance plan changes, she immediately got to work making inquiries, fielding questions from concerned employees and meeting with representatives from CareFirst. She made sure all employees' concerns were mutually understood."
