For the Love of History and
African-American History Month
|
Perhaps it's the love of history that you share with your Valentine. Did you know that in 1935 on land owned by Albert Gray along Fowler Road, Owings Ballpark was home to the Owings Eagles, an African-American men's baseball team? It was the first ballpark in the area to have field lights and it continued to serve the community as an active baseball field until 2000.
Today, informal games are still played at the park, which is still owned by the Gray family. Owings Ballpark is a rare and intact example of the 1930s rural baseball park in Calvert County with particular significance to the local African-American community.
In honor of February being African-American History Month, we invite readers to learn more about the important role of African-Americans in Calvert County's history. Visit the Enoch Pratt Free Library interactive map to explore more than 50 important African-American historical sites in Calvert County.

Valentine's Day is upon us and if you can't think of a sweet surprise for that special mom, dad, daughter, son, friend or love of your life, let Calvert County's cupids give you a hand.
Paint a Memory Together
It's date night every night during February at North Beach's Wine & Design. What better way to create lasting loving memories than by letting your brush tips cross while daubing whatever color fills your hearts and yet-to-be-imagined romantic drawings. The February calendar of canvas choices just posted, so be sure to check out this creative new studio along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Included in your evening is the opportunity to enjoy tastings from one of Calvert County's five wineries. But don't think you have to stay in an art studio to dabble in our wineries' temptations. Explore Grapes and Hops
Spending a day or a weekend with your Valentine exploring the Patuxent Wine Trail is the perfect way to stay warm and let love grow. Calvert County's soil and climate are a close approximation of the famed Tuscany region, and local wine makers are creating sumptuous award-winning wines to rival those anywhere. Roam the trail and sample superb wines in a restored tobacco barn, on the slopes of a rolling vineyard or along the banks of a pristine creek. You will be treated with warm Calvert County hospitality and will take home a wealth of heart-felt memories.
If wine is not what you had in mind, could we interest you in a libation of a different, frosty kind? It is FeBREWary, after all, and Calvert County has four breweries waiting to steal the hearts of beer enthusiasts near and far.
Calvert Brewing Company's farm brewery and beer garden are located at the picturesque Running Hare Vineyard. Here they produce limited-release, small-batch brews and sell them at their tasting room.
Mully's Brewery is a production brewery where you can visit the tasting room to sample the different styles of beer, participate in a guided tour of the facility, learn about the beer making process and buy fresh beer to go.
Southern Maryland's only microbrewery gastro pub serves award-winning signature beers on tap year round, as well as seasonal selections for every type of beer lover. Sample the beers on offer or ask the brew master for a tour.
This Southern Maryland microbrewery features locally made beer with local ingredients. Bring your friends for a tasting of several different kinds of beer, go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the brewery and find out how local beer is made.
Relax, Renew, Reconnect Do you desire a more private and personal expression of love for your loved one? In these busy times, the greatest gift on Valentine's Day may be the gift of quality 'me' time or a spa day together to reconnect with one another. Muscle-melting massages, pampering spa packages and head-to- toe specials await you at Calvert County's more than two dozen spas and salons. Relax, renew and reconnect with your sweetheart and let Calvert County's cupids make you a Valentine gift-giving hero.

2017 Calvert County Restaurant Week
Restaurant Week is Here!
Love of food is what is in the air every February during Calvert County's annual Restaurant Week Feb. 17-26. Local residents and chefs take pride in what is billed as the most delicious week of the year in Calvert County and encourage visitors to join them to experience our area's creative cookery and budget-friendly deals. For Yo Momma's Chicken, Wings & Barbeque Owner and Chef Nate Gagnon, Restaurant Week challenges him to create something new in his kitchen for just this event each year. "We get folks at both our Prince Frederick and Lusby locations looking for an interesting combination of high-end bar food and I'm pretty sure we provided some savory surprises," he shared. "Because every year new folks pile in during Restaurant Week and those new customers have become our regulars!"
Restaurant Week patrons can enter a drawing for prizes by completing an online feedback form or filling out response cards at participating restaurants. A special section on the Calvert County tourism website at features full event details including a list of participating restaurants, menus, a mapping feature highlighting restaurant locations and frequently asked questions.
