Historic Churches Trace Back to Colonial Times
The Reason for the Season

The holiday season is a time of renewal for many. What better way to nourish your soul and curiosity than by taking a day to explore Calvert County's many historic churches.

Of the county's 10 historic churches, the oldest -- Christ Church -- dates to 1672 and was still standing when the Act of Establishment, creating the Province of Maryland, became law in 1692. Christ Church Parish is one of the original 30 parishes of colonial Maryland and of today's Episcopal Diocese of Maryland.

Map out your day to visit and learn more about the religious history of Maryland, rooted deep throughout Calvert County.

Calvert Library offers complimentary or reduced-price passes to more than 20 participating community partners, including museums, wineries, parks and more. All you need is a library card!

Resolve to Have New Adventures

Jump start your new year by making a resolution to explore Calvert County. 'Cause baby, it may be cold outside but there is plenty of fun to be had along the Louis Goldstein Highway in the winter.

Start the year off right at the coolest event of the year. The
Annual North Beach Polar Bear Plunge is always held on Jan. 1.
Some plungers take a quick dip, some splash and some swim in the frigid Chesapeake Bay right at the town's public beach.  After you plunge, stick around to enjoy hot cocoa and roast marshmallows at a warm bonfire with the locals. For $25, participants can receive a certificate and T-shirt with net proceeds donated to Calvert Meals on Wheels, Inc.

If indoors is more your style, then head to the Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center in Prince Frederick where heated pools will carryyou away from the outside chill. Relax in a hot tub or the 28 feet x 52 feet therapy pool heated to 99 degrees while the kids enjoy three slides, water drop bucket and a water playground in the leisure pool. All this, plus a competition pool, open swim area and fitness room await you and your family. The pools are open every day and even have facilities to host small parties.

Don't want to make a splash of any kind? The Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) invites you to leave the water, and your electronics, behind and reconnect with your family and friends in the warmth of this maritime treasure. Plan to attend CMM: Unplugged! where all activities are free with museum admission the weekend of Jan. 14-15. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the personal connections CMM curators, volunteers and staff have with the exhibits that they've never shared with the public before. Challenge your friends and relatives to a game of checkers, jacks or other classic games that don't require batteries or an internet connection. CMM: Unplugged! promises a weekend of rediscovering the art of conversation, imagination and communication.

The Ruddy Duck Brewery & Grill
Taste of Calvert

You don't have to wait for Restaurant Week to enjoy some of Calvert County's savory and unique dishes. At the Ruddy Duck Brewery & Grill in Dowell, the chefs are always looking for just the right combination of flavors to keep their patrons coming back to Southern Maryland's only microbrewery gastro-pub serving hand-crafted beer brewed on site.

The newest addition to their menu is the Ugly Duckling, featuring ground
duck and pork perfectly blended with roasted garlic and sage, then hand-formed to create a well-balanced, juicy burger bursting with flavor. They top it with caramelized onions and ahouse-made IPA mustard aioli and serve it on a pretzel roll.

Visit Ruddy Duck online to see what they are cooking up today.
