Sport Spotlight
A Hunter's Haven Expands

Hunters head to Calvert Count in November for the kickoff of the deer firearms season and to track squirrel, rabbit and several game birds. Calvert County's parks and wild life management areas provide more than 6,700 acres of nature's best camouflage for every skill level and hunting enthusiast.

Hunters brought their climbers, ladders and ground blinds to Calvert County to bag 1,665 deer in the 2015-16 season. This year promises an even bigger return as  Parker's Creek Wildlife Management Area has been added to the list of available public hunting properties. Opening Parker's Creek to hunting adds 1,810 additional acres to the sport.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife and Heritage Services oversees several wildlife management areas in Calvert County for hunting during the fall and winter. Call 301-743-5161 for reservations and more information.

Learn more about hunting sites, schedules and more:
A Maryland hunting permit is required in all of the hunting sites and Parker's Creek requires daily reservations.

10,000 Years of History
Riverside Event Celebrates American Indian Heritage

Capt. John Smith was first to record the bustling lives and villages of the Native Americans along Calvert County's shores.
Today, archaeologists add color and facts to Capt. Smith's exploration journals by unearthing, preserving and studying the history and culture of the tribes who once called Calvert County home.

November is American Indian Heritage Month and Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum will celebrate American Indians, their rich history in Calvert County and their many lasting contributions to the social, political, technological and cultural fabric of this nation.

Bring the family Nov. 5, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to the annual American Indian Heritage Day. All activities are free and take place in a recreated Woodland Indian Village. Local tribe representatives will be on hand providing storytelling, music, dance, arts, crafts and archery. Come and enjoy a cultural day of fun for all ages you won't soon forget.

Oyster Season in
Full Savory Swing

Oyster season is a time to celebrate in Calvert County. The six- month harvest season began Oct. 1 and seafood fanatics are enjoying the briny bivalves fresh from the majestic Chesapeake Bay and serene Patuxent River.

In October and again in January through March, watermen and women work the waterways Monday through Friday from sunrise to 3 p.m. In November and December the harvest is open from sunrise to sunset. This schedule ensures the health of the oyster population and has harvest baskets overflowing this month and next.

Don't miss your chance to enjoy this seasonal local delicacy at its freshest. For more information on Calvert County's many seafood restaurants, visit onlineOr pick up a bushel to take home and have them your way - raw, steamed or fried - in the comfort of your own kitchen.
