Calvert County Receives Third AAA Credit Rating

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) announces that three independent credit rating agencies -- Fitch Ratings, Standard & Poor's Rating Services and Moody's Investors Services -- have assigned Calvert County their highest AAA ratings due to the county's consistently sound financial operations, strong reserves, conservative fiscal policies and growing economy. This is the first time in the county's history that all three credit ratings agencies have assigned AAA ratings.

"This outstanding news demonstrates that Calvert County remains on the right fiscal track," said BOCC President Evan Slaughenhoupt Jr.. "Achieving a triple A rating is not easy. The credit rating agencies are tough and consider numerous factors before assigning a rating. A strong credit rating reduces financing costs for our bond issues and that means significant savings to county taxpayers."

A bond rating reflects the county's financial strength, much like credit scores rank borrowers. Better bond ratings lead to lower interest rates on the bonds counties use to finance projects such as schools, roads and other capital improvements. Calvert County's top-line bond rating helps the county and its citizens save a significant amount of money in interest costs over the life of a bond.

Buy Local Agricultural Week

Support Our Farmers and Pledge to Eat Fresh Every Day

Calvert County will celebrate the bounty of local agricultural products July 23-31 by highlighting the benefits of buying local products from area farms, farmers markets and farm stands.

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners will officially proclaim July 23-31 "Buy Local Agriculture Week" during its meeting Tuesday, July 19, and will encourage county residents to take the pledge to eat at least one thing every day from a local farm during the week.

As part of the week's celebrations, residents can shop at a temporary farmers market on the lawn of the Calvert County Circuit Courthouse on Main Street in Prince Frederick every Wednesday in July from 12 to 4 p.m. Residents are also encouraged to visit the county's many roadside stands as well as the farmers markets during this week and throughout the summer.

Be Wary of Door-to-Door Energy Sales

From time to time, the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) will be notified by members of the public, law enforcement and elected officials that representatives from alternative energy suppliers are going door to door to solicit business. Maryland is a deregulated state for electric supply so customers can choose an alternative supplier of energy.

However, the BOCC wishes to inform constituents that individuals going door to door are not "working on behalf of SMECO." These companies are licensed to do business in SMECO's service territory, but neither SMECO nor the county have any relationship with them. Customers are encouraged to contact SMECO with questions about the cost of electric service and are warned to never divulge account numbers or other private information to a door-to-door solicitor. For information, please contact SMECO's customer service line on 888-440-3311.
