Board Approves Balanced
Fiscal Year 2017 Budget

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved a $246.8 million balanced budget by a vote of three to two earlier this month. The budget includes increases to real property and local income tax rates to take effect July 1, 2016 and Jan. 1, 2017, respectively, as well as a resolution to annually re-evaluate the need for the tax increase.

The new tax rates will generate approximately $8.6 million and close a significant and ongoing financial deficit created after a prolonged national economic downturn.

The approved FY 2017 General Fund budget is approximately $7.9 million more than the FY 2016 General Fund budget. Learn more and review the approved budget online.

Record Remains Open on Zoning Ordinance Changes

A joint public hearing of BOCC and the Calvert County Planning Commission was held Tuesday, June 14 at the Calvert Pines Senior Center. Staff reviewed proposed text amendments to the Calvert County Zoning Ordinance and the Prince Frederick Zoning Ordinance. After hearing nearly 40 residents provide feedback on the proposed text amendments, the BOCC voted to keep the public record open to hear comments for two more weeks.

The public is encouraged to review the text amendments. Citizens have until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28 to share their comments or concerns. Mail written comments to Maureen Frederick, clerk to the Board of County Commissioners, at 175 Main St., Prince Frederick, MD 20678, or submit them via email.
