Balanced FY17 Budget Proposal
Presented at Public Hearing

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) presented its proposed Fiscal Year 2017 budget at a public hearing Tuesday, May 24, at the Calvert Pines Senior Center in Prince Frederick at 7 p.m. The $246.8 million balanced budget adheres to the BOCC's priorities for supporting an excellent public school system, maintaining county services and prudently managing citizens' tax dollars through responsible long-range planning and fiscal restraint.

In the budget are proposed increases to real property and income tax rates to remove the deficit shown in the Staff Recommended Budget presented in March. This will be the first time the real property tax rate has been raised in Calvert County in 29 years and the first time the income tax rate has been raised in 13 years.

Residents are encouraged review and comment on the budget. To review the BOCC proposed budget, please visit online.

Commissioners Announce Plans for New Calvert County Animal Shelter

The Board of County Commissioners committed to opening an animal shelter in Calvert County through a public/private partnership with Marrick Properties.
Pictured with the county commissioners at the press conference, from left, are former Calvert County Commissioner Linda Kelley and Marrick Properties Owner and Vice President Rick Bailey.

The BOCC made its announcement during a press conference on the grounds where the new shelter will be built at 5055 Hallowing Point Road in Prince Frederick. The shelter will be between 8,000 and 14,000 square feet and will employ up to 10 full-time positions, including a volunteer coordinator and manager. The new Calvert County animal shelter cost projections do not impact the FY17 proposed budget. An FY18 opening is targeted.

The new shelter will save all healthy and treatable animals, even when the shelter is full. Only terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety will be euthanized. Learn more online about the shelter and the board's decision to end its investment in the aging Hughesville Tri-County Animal Shelter.

Mark Willis is New Community Planning & Building Director

Calvert County Public Works Deputy Director of Enterprise Fund Operations Mark Willis has been promoted to Calvert County Department of Community Planning & Building (CPB) director. Willis replaces Thomas Barnett, who resigned from the position last month.

Willis earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Florida. He is a retired Marine Corps ground combat logistics and maintenance officer and graduated with honors from the Army War College. He is also a 2014 graduate of Leadership Maryland. A Calvert County native, he proudly boasts that, like his wife and children, he is a graduate of Calvert High School.

Willis is committed to the community having served as a volunteer for the Calvert County Historical Society, the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM), American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Calvert County Citizens Green Team and the Annual Tea Party for the Ladies Club of JPPM. He has worked for Calvert County government for 16 years.

"I'm thrilled to move in to this next phase of my career," he said. "I am joining a very talented corps of people in CPB and look forward to working with them to realign our county's current plans with the vision and goals of the citizens of Calvert County and the Board of County Commissioners."
