According to the 2012 U.S. Census, women own 36 percent of all businesses, a 30 percent increase over 2007. At the local level, women entrepreneurs are a driving force in the small business sector.

Calvert County celebrates Business Appreciation Week 2016 with a salute to women entrepreneurs. During the first full week of May, the Calvert County Department of Economic Development is organizing a series of events focusing on the vital role of women business owners in our local economy.

Join the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners for this week of special events, workshops, networking activities and personal visits with county business owners. To view the schedule and register for events, visit the Department of Economic Development online at www.ecalvert.com.

Southern Pines Senior Center Celebrates Dining Area Expansion

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners joined the staff of the Southern Pines Senior Center and its clients last week to celebrate a recent expansion at the facility. More than 60 attendees were on hand for the ribbon cutting and reveal of the new center dining room.

Funded by a $131,000 block grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and $40,000 from Calvert County Government, the center improvement addressed overcrowding issues by adding 918 square feet to the dining area. On average, the center serves lunch to more than 35 Calvert County senior citizens every weekday.

"We have already seen the benefits of this expansion area," explained Ed Sullivan, program specialist with the Calvert County Office on Aging. "Because of this additional space, our seniors can more easily maneuver through our dining room, particularly those with walkers."

Rockfish Season Opens April 16

Showing off his 2015 trophy rockfish, Garn Godwin V, of Aquasco, Maryland, is surrounded by his family: son Garn Godwin IV, dad Garn Godwin VI, and wife Dianne Godwin.

The state's spring rockfish season begins this Saturday, April 16, and anglers are encouraged to set out for the Chesapeake Bay. Calvert County is home to the bay's largest charter boat fleet that is guided by experienced boat captains standing by to help fishing enthusiasts reel in "the big one."

Just ask Garn Godwin V, of Aquasco, Maryland. Last year, during the height of the season, Godwin arrived at a Solomons Island check-in station with an award-winning rockfish that measured 52 inches and weighed 53 pounds. The fight earned him the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association Spring Tournament's $65,437 purse.

The 2016 trophy season runs through May 15. Anglers may catch one striped bass per day measuring 35 inches or larger. Learn more about Calvert County's charter boat opportunities, or where to launch your own boat, by visiting www.choosecalvert.com.

Farmers Markets Seek Local Vendors

The farmers markets open in May and now it is time for local farmers, vendors and watermen to sign up to sell their wares.

The Calvert County Farmers Market Association is seeking vendors for three locations: Calvert Memorial Hospital, Calvert County Fairgrounds and Solomons. These are "producers-only" markets, meaning all products sold at the markets must be grown/produced by a local farmer. Learn more!
