Rock On!
Time to Gear Up
for Great Fishing

As the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries warm in the early spring sun, rockfish (also known as stripers or striped bass) are teased from winter slumber to spawn in the bay's freshwater tributaries.

This time of year also marks the opening of rockfish trophy season and anglers come from miles around to test their skills and try to catch the Big One. Known for its brawny, feisty nature - and delectable taste - rockfish are one of the most sought-after targets in the mid-Atlantic.

The spring season for rockfish, Maryland's state fish, kicks off on April 16, in Maryland's portion of the Chesapeake Bay. Spring recreational fishing opportunities for rockfish run through May 15, with a daily limit of one fish per person of 35 inches or larger.

Need help planning a memorable fishing adventure from Maryland's western shore? Check out the 2016 Calvert County Visitors Guide, chock-full of information on boat rentals, marinas, charter boats and tours. And if you need creative culinary ideas for how to prepare your fresh-caught rockfish, click here for some of our favorite recipes.
