Dip in to Oyster Season
Oyster season is in full swing and the best bivalves on the bay are now landing on wharves all over Calvert County.
Long a part of Southern Maryland heritage, oysters have been a treasured delicacy since Native Americans inhabited the area. When Capt. John Smith mapped the Chesapeake Bay in 1608, he recorded that oysters "lay as thick as stones." Today the movement to restore oyster populations is succeeding in the Chesapeake Bay and is supporting the farm-to-plate phenomenon sweeping our region.
Whether raw, steamed, fried or Rockefeller, whether by the bushel or by the dozen, put oysters on your menu. To help you get started, we have collected some of the favorite recipes from local restaurateurs. You can find the freshest local catch at these seafood suppliers:

Hunting Season Harkens
Calvert County's pristine natural areas are a major draw for regional hunters. Bow, powder and shotgun enthusiasts from across the state know the county is home to many a hunter's tale.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife and Heritage Service manages several wildlife management areas in Calvert County for hunting during the fall and winter. A Maryland hunting permit is required to hunt at these sites. Make your reservations today by calling 301-743-5161. Note that hunting is not allowed on public lands on Sundays.

"A Season to Remember"
Annual Festival of Trees Marks Final Year
Capping a long holiday tradition, the final Festival of Trees event celebrates the season Nov. 27-28 to end a 27-year run.
 Calvert Hospice hosts the festival and has made it a must-attend event to usher in the holiday season. This year's festival will feature exquisitely decorated trees, family entertainment, a wide variety of vendors, a beautiful poinsettia display and a visit from Santa. The festivities take place Friday, Nov. 27, from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 28, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at St. John Vianney Church in Prince Frederick.

Ornament Show & Sale Features One-of-a-Kind Wonders
Find unique hand-crafted ornaments for your holiday display at Annmarie Garden's 8th annual Ornament Show & Sale Nov. 14 through Jan. 2.
This unique shopping opportunity is actually a juried show featuring extraordinary ornaments made by regional artists. The Main Gallery in the Arts Building is the venue where the ornaments are hung on trees for display. Peruse and pick your favorites.
Admission to the ornament show area is free during normal business hours. Beginning Dec. 4, a $6 admission fee provides access to the show and the annual holiday Garden In Lights display.
This magical outdoor tour takes visitors on a trip through glittering woods to view amazing light sculptures. It's a great way to welcome the holidays.
