Urgent Arrival Handled with Care

The Board of County Commissioners recently recognized a group of county public safety employees for working together to help deliver a baby boy who wanted to arrive during the commute to the hospital.

From left: Maj. Dave McDowell, Sheriff Mike Evans, Dfc. Mike Tomlinson, Cpl. Eric Basham, Control Center Dispatcher Crystal Klinedinst, Communications Chief Yvette Myers, Control Center Dispatcher Michelle Weems, Sgt. Joe Hollinger and Dfc. Aaron Locke.

The story unfolded quickly April 25, 2015, when Public Safety Dispatcher II Crystal Klinedinst took a frantic 911 call from the soon-to-be dad at 2:45 a.m. He let her know that his wife was in active labor, in the car, on the shoulder of MD Route 231, nearing Prince Frederick.

Klinedinst immediately gave the husband instructions over the phone on how to deliver the baby. At the same time, Public Dispatcher I Michelle Weems dispatched nearby Sheriff Cpl. Eric Basham and Sheriff Dfc. Aaron Locke, who is also a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician. The deputies arrived and three minutes after the call came into 911, a healthy baby boy entered the world. Mom, dad and baby are doing well.

New Video Highlights Highway Crews

The Calvert County Highway Maintenance Division is a relatively small group with an outsized mission: keeping more than 900 lane miles of county roads safe and in good condition. Whether it is summer mowing, wintertime snow removal, tree trimming, litter control and much more, county highway crews are out in force daily maintaining local roadways.

A new video highlights the work of the Highway Maintenance Division and lets residents know how to report problems. View the video, along with others on county services, at the online Videos on Demand portal.

BOCC Pursues Acquisition of Former SMECO Property

The Board of County Commissioners voted last month to exercise a purchase option on the former SMECO district office complex on Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick.

The 20-acre property includes a 14,000-square-feet office building and other structures. The funds for the $2.6-million purchase price would be bonded if the purchase moves forward.

Acquisition of the property will give the county several options as the Prince Frederick Town Center is further developed, including the potential for a community center. A public hearing on the acquisition will be held prior to the purchase.
