Preserving and Remembering Calvert County's Rich History

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) encourages citizens to have a voice in the policies that shape our county. Through a variety of boards, commissions and committees, voters can actively participate in local government. Two important groups  play active roles in the how the county manages historic districts and educates the public about historic areas.

The Historic District Commission: This commission serves as a citizen review board on historic districting decisions. In its decision-making capacity, the commission approves work permits related to historic preservation. The seven members serve three-year terms and meet monthly on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the County Services Plaza at 150 Main St., Prince Frederick.

The Heritage Committee: This committee acts as an advisory body that identifies ways to increase public awareness of the county's historical and cultural heritage. The committee promotes the diversity of historical and cultural resources by supporting the History Fair and an annual heritage photo competition. The committee members meet at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday bimonthly at Linden in Prince Frederick.

Calvert County residents who are registered voters are eligible to serve and encouraged to participate. Applications for these groups may be obtained from the commissioners' office (175 Main St., Room A203), the Calvert County public library or online. For further information, please contact Lisa Tolomei at 410-535-1600, ext. 2214.

Dr. Ralph Eshelman Earns Historic Preservation Awards

Historian and Lusby resident Dr. Ralph Eshelman was recognized by the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners June 2 with the Historic Preservation Service and Education Awards. These annual awards are given for outstanding achievement and excellence in protecting and preserving the county's cultural heritage. It was the first time one recipient was honored for service and education in a combined award.

Eshelman came to Calvert County as the director of the Calvert Marine Museum, a position he held from 1974 to 1990. He is now widely known as the leading authority in the history and paleontology of the Patuxent River. For more than 35 years, he has studied, written about and lectured on the history of the region, including the War of 1812.

Students Receive Scholarships

Two Calvert County students earned scholarships from Calvert County's Employee Recognition Committee (ERC) for maintaining impressive high school careers.

Pictured with the county commissioners from left are: Patuxent High School graduate Kyle Gronda, son of Calvert County Solid Waste Weigh Clerk Tu Tu Gronda, who was awarded $1,000. Get on the Bus!

You may know that Calvert County provides public bus transportation that links residents with major shopping, medical and employment areas, as well as with public services available in Prince Frederick. But did you know that each year Calvert County public transportation buses travel enough miles to circle the earth more than 21 times?

A new online video gives an overview of the county's seven fixed routes and four demand-response/para-transit routes. Check it out and encourage your friends and neighbors to get on the bus!
