Celebrating Science in Solomons

Chesapeake Biological Laboratory Celebrates 90 Years

It started from humble beginnings: In a cramped fisherman's shack on Solomons Island, Dr. Reginald V. Truitt started studying the biology of oysters using a borrowed microscope. In 1925, his one-man operation became the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL), the oldest publicly supported marine laboratory on the East Coast.

Today, CBL is an environmental research facility of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), the principal institution for advanced environmental research and graduate studies within the University System of Maryland. CBL is currently home to about 120 scientists, graduate students and staff and is widely recognized for excellence in fisheries science, restoration and ecosystem science, and environmental chemistry and toxicology. For example, CBL fisheries scientists played a pivotal role in the development of the management plan that led to the recovery of the striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay.

In celebration of 90 years of innovative research, CBL is inviting the public to attend its Science for Citizens seminar series in which scientists discuss their research related to "hot topic" environmental issues.

Solomons' tourists and residents are also welcomed at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory Visitor Center, which opens from May to early December. Campus tours are provided every Friday at 2 p.m. from June through November, and behind-the-scenes group tours can be arranged throughout the year by contacting the CBL Outreach Coordinator

Chesapeake Beach Stars

On Sunday, May 24, starting at 11 a.m., educational and fun games and activities are planned for all ages, including a picnic lunch, freebies, nonprofit vendors, Superheroes of Southern Maryland and other surprises. Crabbing Season is Now Open

If you want to come to Calvert County and spend time like the locals do, you'll have to try crabbing at least once. In

fact, according to the Baltimore Suntwo of the best crabbing spots in Maryland are right here in Calvert County in our bustling town of Solomons and along the quiet shores of the Patuxent River at Kings Landing Park.

Crab season in Maryland started April 1 and lasts until Dec. 15. For details on the rules of recreational crabbing, visit the Department of Natural Resources online.

If chicken necks on a string don't get you any crustaceans, though, there are plenty of seafood restaurants in Calvert County that serve crabs in any number of delicious forms. Check out the 2015 Calvert County Visitors Guide for all the best places to visit, eat and stay.
