Local Boards, Commissions and Committees
Commission on Aging Gives a Voice to Elderly

The Board of County Commissioners encourages citizens to have a voice in the policies that shape our county. Through a variety of boards, commissioners and committees, voters can actively participate in local government. This year, we highlight these groups in each edition of Calvert Currents.

The Commission on Aging stays informed of developments and programs at local, state and national levels and serves as an advisory council to the Calvert County Office on Aging. Its mission is to give a voice to the senior community and foster programs, housing and activities to promote healthy living among the elderly. The commission hosts information booths at local events and sponsors nutrition presentations throughout the county. Commission members make it a priority to stay current with challenges in the Southern Maryland senior community and work to resolve them.

The commission meets the third Thursday of every month at 9 a.m. at the Calvert Pines Senior Center in Prince Frederick. The 16 board members serve four-year terms

Calvert County residents who are registered voters are eligible to serve and encouraged to participate. Applications for these groups may be obtained from the commissioners' office (175 Main St., Room A203), and Calvert County public library or online. For information about these four groups, please contact Lisa Tolomei at 410-535-1600, ext. 2214.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Dominion Expansion

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners joined Dominion Cove Point leadership, international business partners and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan March 25 to celebrate the groundbreaking for the Dominion Cove Point LNG Liquefaction project.

With construction expected to be complete in 2017, this is one of the most important economic development projects in Maryland. Cove Point is part of what has been called America's "natural gas revolution."

April is Autism Awareness Month

Autism is the fastest growing, serious developmental disability resulting from a neurological disorder, noted Calvert County Commissioner Evan Slaughenhoupt Jr. when reading the proclamation designating April as Autism Awareness Month. "Calvert County commends all those who are dedicated to training and activism, providing services to individuals and families affected by autism," he continued.

Pictured here with the board to receive the proclamation from left are: Volunteer Community Outreach Ambassador for Autism Speaks™ and Environmental Planner for Calvert County Department of Community Planning & Building Christine Finamore with her daughter Natalie and son Nicholas; Christina Harris, director of special education for Calvert County Public Schools; Robert "Chip" Gaither, president of The Autism Project in Owings; and Calvert County Sheriff Dfc. Justin Livingston.
