The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has regulations covering the trophy season that runs through May 15.

Annual Cultural Celebration Marks 37th Year

Calvert County is proud to be the home of the annual      Southern Maryland Celtic Festival and Highland Gathering. Sponsored by the Celtic Society of Southern Maryland, this year's event marks the festival's 37th season.

Magic in the Air
Treasures Await at the Fairy & Gnome Home Festival

The Fairy & Gnome Home Festival, a family favorite, coincides with Annmarie Garden's Fairies in the Garden exhibit, a magical show of more than 50 fabulous handmade fairy and gnome homes.

The festival features the lovely Fairy Lolly, a playful area where young guests can climb, explore, build and dream with a variety of creative toys and props. Guests can build their own fairy houses and gnome homes and create their own magical props and crafts.

Children will thrill to the new Gnome Games, musical performances and guests like the fairy Queen Ambrosia and Princess Cricket.  And no festival would be complete without face painting, bubbles, chalk fun and plenty of great photo opportunities. Food and drinks will be available as well.

Visit the fairy vendors to purchase costumes and accessories and dress up for the day! Mark your calendar for Sunday, April 26, from noon to 4 p.m.  Admission is free for members; $5 for non-members (ages 3 and older); free for ages 2 and younger.

Inky it Is
Calvert Marine Museum Octopus Gets a Name

The Calvert Marine Museum's new octopus picked her own name after a month-long contest.

With more than 600 entries submitted, the top 12 names were selected and the museum board of directors decided on the final three names. The choices "Inky," "Wiggles" and "Squirt" were put in separate containers baited with shrimp and the octopus chose her own name Feb. 10.

Five-year old Brady Jordan from Hollywood, Maryland is the winner of the contest and basket full of goodies. Don't miss seeing Inky on your next trip to the Calvert Marine Museum; she is very responsive and loves visitors.

An Otter Joy
New River Otter Swims onto Museum Scene

The search began last October to find a river otter to call Calvert Marine Museum home after the passing of Keenan, a.k.a "Bubbles," half of the famed Bubbles and Squeak duo whose playful antics delight museum visitors.

The call was answered when Estuarine Biology Curator David Moyer reached out to rescue/rehabbers, other zoos, aquariums and private collectors and found an otter rescued from legal trapping in Louisiana.

After nine hours on the road, "Guinness" arrived at the museum Feb. 1. Join us in welcoming Guinness the next time you visit the Calvert Marine Museum.
