Local Boards, Commissions and Committees
Get Involved in
Local Government

The Board of County Commissioners encourages citizens to have a voice in the policies that shape our county. Through a variety of boards, commissions and committees, voters can actively participate in local government.

These boards deal with important issues including health and welfare, social programs, environmental issues, agricultural preservation, economic development, tourism, architectural review and women and elderly issues, to name a few.

With this edition, we begin a monthly series highlighting these advisory groups. Calvert County residents who are registered voters are eligible to serve. Applications may be obtained from the commissioners' office (175 Main St., Room A203), any Calvert County public library or online.

Adult Guardianship Review Board

State law requires each local Department of Social Services to implement a program of protective services for disabled individuals and vulnerable adults who have no family or friends to take care of them. Each jurisdiction appoints an Adult Guardianship Review Board to review guardianship held by public agencies within their area.

In Calvert County, the board meets twice a year to review the care and well-being of Calvert County residents who are under the guardianship of the Calvert County Office on Aging. Board members serve three-year terms and the 11 members must meet specific requirements, including one of the following:

  • Be a psychiatrist
  • Be a representative of a local nonprofit social service organization
  • Be Calvert County citizen

For additional information about this committee or how to apply, please contact Lisa Tolomei in the commissioners' office at 410-535-1600, ext. 2214.

Students: Get Ready for Job Fair!

The Calvert County Parks and Recreation Division will hold its 10th annual Student Job Fair on Feb. 4 at the Northeast Community Center in Chesapeake Beach. High school and college students are encouraged to tighten up their resumes and attend the event from 1-4 p.m.

Local businesses looking for hard-working student employees to fill summer and seasonal positions are also encouraged to participate in the fair.

The Northeast Community Center is located at 4075 Gordon Stinnett Ave. For more information about the fair or to reserve a space for your business, please call 410-257-2554.

Honor Veterans with Commemorative Bricks

The Calvert County Department of General Services is coordinating the annual memorial brick campaign taking place now through April 3, 2015. For a limited time, the public can purchase memorial bricks to be placed at the Veterans Patio, located at the World War II "On Watch" Memorial Statue in Solomons.

The bricks are available to memorialize those who served our country during World War II. The cost of each brick is $100 and all contributions are tax deductible. Purchasers will be notified when the bricks are in place and available for viewing.

An On Watch application is available online. To learn more, call Melinda Donnelly at 410-535-1600, ext. 2565.

The "On Watch" memorial statue is an 8-foot-tall bronze statue by Maryland artist Antonio Tobias Mendez commemorating the people and work done at the Solomons Amphibious Training Base during World War II. This, the nation's first amphibious training facility, was active from 1942 to 1945 and its effect on the area continues to be felt today.
