The County Department of General Services Supports the Community in Myriad Ways
When the lights are on at evening sports games, the water temperature is just right at the Hall Aquatic Center, the sidewalks are clear of snow at the libraries and the doors are open at sites like the Calvert Marine Museum, Battle Creek Cypress Swamp and Flag Ponds Nature Park, take a moment to think of the staff of the county Department of General Services (DGS).
|
Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm in Prince Frederick is one of many sites managed by DGS. |
Overseen by Wilson Freeland, DGS is the caretaker for county-owned facilities that host local government functions and provide citizens and visitors with recreational and cultural opportunities. The department covers a wide range of responsibilities:
Buildings and Grounds handles the custodial care and maintenance of county-owned and leased facilities. The division provides these services to all county departments, county libraries, the Sheriff's Office, court systems, community centers and other sites. It also manages noxious weed control support for active farms.
The Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons explores the cultural and natural history of Southern Maryland. Exhibits and programs are dedicated to three themes: regional paleontology, estuarine life of the tidal Patuxent River and adjacent Chesapeake Bay and the maritime history of these waters.
Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum presents the history of the Chesapeake Beach Railway and the towns of Chesapeake Beach and North Beach. Exhibits depict the historical significance of the railway and the old Chesapeake Beach amusement park.
Calvert County Mosquito Control provides countywide integrated mosquito abatement through physical, biological and chemical control options. You may have seen the spray trucks in summertime, and staff will also provide "mosquito fish" for ornamental ponds free of charge to help control mosquito larvae.
Natural Resources operates the county's pristine natural areas that provide outdoor recreation and educational opportunities. The division manages Flag Ponds Nature Park, King's Landing Park, Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary, Hughes Memorial Tree Farm, Hutchins' Fishing Pond and Biscoe Gray Reserve.
Parks & Recreation provides lifetime leisure activities through a comprehensive program of courses, activities, sports and more in community centers, public schools and county parks. The division also manages the county's recreation parks including Dunkirk District Park, Hallowing Point Park, Cove Point Park and others.
Visit the Department of General Services online for more details on this very active part of county government.

Health Department to Distribute Potassium Iodide
Effort is Part of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Preparedness
The Calvert County Health Department is holding a drive-through clinic on Saturday Aug. 23, 9 a.m. to noon, at Patuxent High School in Lusby to refresh the supply of potassium iodide (KI) previously distributed in 2008. Those who live or work within 10 miles of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant are eligible to receive KI tablets, which help protect the thyroid gland from damage caused by radioactive iodine that could be released from the plant in the unlikely event of an emergency.
The KI tablets distributed in 2008 had an expiration date of February 2014, and the Food and Drug Administration extended the expiration date to August 2014. Tablets marked with an expiration date of February 2014 need to be replaced now. Replacement tablets are also available at the Health Department office in Prince Frederick Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
KI only protects the thyroid gland from radiation damage and is not a substitute for other protective actions such as evacuation or taking shelter. Should a radioactive emergency occur, official recommendations to the public for protective actions, including taking KI, will be broadcast by the media.
