Greetings in the Name of Jesus and welcome to the PLN Sunday Night Bible Fellowship!
The following article is part of a series on FREEDOM in America that appeared in the Hood County Newspaper during the four weeks leading up to Memorial Day. Since most of our readers are either outside Hood County, Texas or have chosen not to take the local newspaper, we decided to run these articles as part of our summer program for this newsletter leading up to July 4. We pray that these articles will bless you and cause you to be thankful for our God-given FREEDOM.
THREE: THE PURSUIT OF FREEDOM
This is the third in a series of articles about FREEDOM in America. In the first installment we established that according to the Bible, ALL Freedom comes from God. In fact, its very existence requires His presence (2 Corinthians 3:17). Further, we concluded that God's BEST for people is that we live in FREEDOM so we can make a FREE choice to accept OR reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ and then once decided, enjoy His special blessing to its fullest.
Whatever God is willing to make available is something believers should eagerly PURSUE because EVERYTHING He gives us is GOOD. Certainly, FREEDOM is one of the GOOD things ALL people desire but historically the ones who've been the most successful at it have encouraged God's involvement. When God is leading things, FREEDOM is always one of the attending benefits. But along the way, people have to resist the temptation to restrict His involvement which He WILL allow us to do if that's our choice. Of course the consequence will ALWAYS be the loss of FREEDOM.
Surely in the history of the world, the special people that led the founding of America understood this relationship better than anybody ever has. One of the main things that defined them was that most were coming out of one of the great Christian revivals in history called the First Great Awakening that occurred between about 1730 and 1755. Millions were saved and a revamped Christianity emerged that focused more on the divine destiny of individuals and less on the resolute authority of church hierarchies.
One of the facts in our history that many folks today have lost sight of is that during the second half of the 18th century the American clergy took a leading role in RESISTING the unrighteous authority of the English Monarchy. They understood the biblical principle that FREEDOM could only come to a country by way of a healthy relationship with God ON A NATIONAL LEVEL and they boldly taught that to their congregations. Indeed, the British themselves said after they lost the Revolutionary War that had it not been for the influence of the "Black Robed Regiment," they wouldn't have lost. The historical truth is many pastors and ministers fought the enemy in the field LEADING the members of their congregations into battle. They considered that the PURSUIT of FREEDOM was worth it, a gift of great value from God that required His involvement and their direct leadership.
That's why biblical principles are at the core of our founding documents for all to see. And it's also why the various personal writings both public and private of our Founding Fathers warned against ever trying to remove God from government. Did you know that President George Washington dedicated America to God on April 30, 1789 during his inauguration speech in New York City? Historians say that only two countries in history have been so dedicated by their principal government leaders: the United States and Israel.
In sum, FREEDOM and the presence of God ALWAYS go together. Even though some folks may try to revise history the truth is what it is: there were those in 1776 who knew the value of freedom, knew that it came from Christ and were willing to PURSUE it at the risk of losing personal possessions and life itself. Against all odds, they were willing to PURSUE God's best for their new country and RESIST the greatest military presence in the world. And they won!
NEXT WEEK: THE DEFENSE OF FREEDOM
Thanks for joining our discussion tonight. We'll be looking for you again NEXT Sunday night on June 26. In the meantime may the Lord bless you with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), pushing you to VICTORY in every area of life!
Sinners' Prayer
If you've never invited Jesus to be your Lord, you can do so today by believing and saying out loud the following simple prayer:
Jesus, I declare today with all my heart that I believe in you and I believe that God raised you from the dead. I acknowledge that my sins have been forgiven for all time and I ask you to come into my life today and be my Lord and Savior. Thank you for salvation and eternal life.
If you were sincere as you prayed, God has already come into your life and you're a new creation, a totally new species recreated in His image. Now ask the Lord to lead you to a good faith-based, bible-teaching church where you can be equipped to fulfill your potential in the Kingdom of God.
When you get a moment have someone help you look up the following scriptures because they confirm what you've done by saying this prayer and believing what you said:
Romans 10:9
2 Corinthians 5:17
Ephesians 2:8
