Greetings in the name of Christ Jesus!

Have you noticed that almost anywhere you go these days it’s common to hear the expression, “God bless you?” Certainly, as you would expect, you can hear it said in our churches from both the Pulpit and among congregants on Sundays or during Wednesday night Bible studies. But isn’t it interesting that you also hear it in the World among people who don’t otherwise have any particular relationship with God? Even those who profess not to believe He even exists will say “bless you” when you sneeze not realizing that only Creator God can author a real blessing.

Sometimes when Believers say “God bless you” they really are making a sincere expression of their hope that God will provide His Blessing. But in most contemporary usage both inside and outside the Church, “God bless you” has become largely a nice little saying that people offer up in certain situations without giving it much thought. It makes us feel good about ourselves to say it but our nearly thoughtless conveyance of it reveals both our lack of sincerity and a scarcity of appreciation for what God’s Blessing is actually all about.

Most of us think that a “blessing” is a benefit from God that He gives us when we have been good. The truth is The Blessing of God is much more than that; in fact, it is an essential element of life in His Kingdom. We know this because the Word says He has set before us life and death, the blessing and the curse (Deuteronomy 30:19). There is a critical choice to be made and indeed He has given us a free will to choose. Notice though that He has provided only two options to choose from: life with The Blessing or death and the curse. Friend, we need to come to a better understanding of God’s Blessing because for lack of knowledge many born again Believers these days are routinely making the wrong choice.

  • Defining The Blessing
  • The first time in scripture that the Blessing is mentioned in connection with human beings is in Genesis 1:28 when God blessed the man and the woman just after He created them in His own image. They hadn’t said or done anything yet but God blessed them anyway. And immediately after He had done that He told them to “be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

What many people miss from this sequence is that the Blessing of God carried a purpose with it. It wasn’t just an idle moment when God was doing some nice thing for His new creation. It wasn’t a reward for something they had done because they hadn’t had time to do anything yet. No, the Blessing was actually an empowerment to carry out the assignment that immediately followed. In other words, it was a conveyance of divine favor and within it were contained all of the talents, abilities and attributes that would be needed by God’s new creation to fill and rule the entire earth. Thus, God connected the man and the woman to Himself with His Blessing and out of it they drew the power and anointing to successfully pursue and perform their assignment.

The truth is our Lord is a God of purpose and His Blessing is never given without purpose to accomplish something meaningful for His Kingdom. If He blesses us with more financial prosperity, there is something we are supposed to do with those increased resources to benefit the Kingdom instead of just consuming them on our own lusts and desires. If He blesses with increased revelation or wisdom, there is a purpose that is far beyond just making us feel good. The truth is God never gives assignments that He doesn’t also equip us to accomplish and He uses His Blessing to empower us to succeed in those assignments.

  • Sin Brings a New Connection
  • While the man and the woman were connected to the Blessing of God, they lived in total “shalom” prosperity with nothing missing and nothing broken. They lived constantly in the presence of God and all their needs were met. They went about their assignment and were caretakers of the Garden that was to have been gradually expanded from its original boundaries until it filled the whole earth.

But God had clearly told them they could eat any fruit in the Garden except from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and that if they did ever eat it, they would surely die (Genesis 2:17). The Hebrew word that is translated “die” in this scripture does not mean physical death; rather, it means that they would be “separated” from God which would result in spiritual death. When they ultimately did eat the fruit, they disobeyed God’s direct order which was a sin and spiritual death then occurred causing them to disconnect from God and from the Blessing that had empowered them. When God called out to the man and asked him where he was (Genesis 3:9), it was not because He didn’t know where he was; it was to demonstrate that for the first time the man and the woman had been separated from His presence. And, it is important to note that God did not disconnect Himself from His creation; they disconnected themselves from Him.

Friend, the human being has been created in such a way that on a spirit level we have to be connected to an authority. There are only two choices so we will either be connected to God or to Satan. Thus, when the man and the woman chose to disobey and disconnect themselves from God, they lost the empowerment to carry out their original assignment and by default they reconnected to Satan and were cast out of the Garden. Where before the man had been in authority over the entire earth, he now as Adam surrendered that authority to Satan and was subject to reassignment. Whenever we connect to Satan, we also connect to the Curse that Satan oversees (see Genesis 3:14-24). The Blessing is God’s empowerment to prosper and succeed; the Curse is Satan’s empowerment for bondage and failure. The Blessing brings faith and hope; the Curse brings fear and despair. We receive life and the Blessing from being connected to God; we receive death and the Curse from being disconnected.

  • Restoration of the Blessing
  • To this day people are born into this world with a dead spirit that is separated from God and with a sin nature inherited from Adam. In other words, we start our lives connected to Satan and his Curse. Between Adam and Jesus only a relatively few people who were willing to obey the commandments of God were connected to the Blessing so they could be empowered to accomplish specific and important things for His Kingdom. But even they eventually died in their sins and in spiritual separation from God.

But Jesus and the Cross of Calvary changed everything. Certainly, true Believers know that when Christ was raised from the dead, He made it possible for every person who wants it to be forgiven for their sins and to receive eternal life by faith in Him. In that process those once dead spirits are reborn and reconnected to God. But friend, too many of us have failed to grasp that He also restored access to the Blessing and that by faith we can have it along with our salvation.

In the Book of Galatians 3:9 and 14, it is referred to as the Blessing of Abraham but it’s the same Blessing that God spoke over the man and the woman in the Garden. We know this because other verses in that same chapter of Galatians say that Jesus became a curse so that we could be redeemed from the Curse (Galatians 3:13) that Adam caused by the sin of disobedience. By faith in Christ then we can disconnect from Satan and the Curse and be reconnected to God and the Blessing, empowered to carry out His original assignment to “be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over very living thing that moves upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28). Please take note: we still have the same assignment but many of us are failing to access our empowerment. Under the New Covenant, Believers have the right to live under the Blessing if they choose to even as the World in which we live continues to be subject to the Curse.

Then why do so few of us appear to manifest the Blessing in our lives? Once again our problems are ignorance and the flesh. Walking in the Blessing starts with faith that the Word is true but if we don’t know what the Word says, we don’t have a point to release our faith from and we flounder in ignorance. Also, the only way to actually plug into the Blessing is to walk in the spirit depending on God to lead us through life. God always deals with us Spirit to spirit. But the flesh wants you to depend on yourself and when you do that you subject yourself again to the Curse. For example, when you allow your emotions to rule your life, you are subject to the consequences of emotions: broken relationships, defeat, rejection, depression, disappointment, etc. The Curse is always self-driven; the Blessing is Spirit-driven.

  • Some Final Thoughts
  • In sum, access to the Blessing has been restored by the work of Christ at Calvary. But we have to be willing and informed enough to actually connect to that Blessing. We still have a choice to make: life and the blessing or death (separation from the presence of God) and the curse. Even though we have accepted Jesus as Lord, we can choose to live in ignorance and by the flesh and subject ourselves to the consequences of the curse.

The Law of biblical prosperity that is operating here can be stated as follows: In order to enjoy the fullness of biblical prosperity in our lives, we must be connected to the Blessing. The Blessing is your inheritance but you must learn to receive it, to apprehend it and make use of it for your life.
