Benjamin Franklin Statue's Return Celebrated with Ribbon Cutting

Officials celebrated the longest-standing bronze statue in the state being back on its pedestal with a ribbon cutting on Thursday at Old City Hall. Freedom Trail players introduced the Benjamin Franklin statue and even broke character telling the audience it was odd to give tours without being able to show visitors the statue.

"Ben Franklin said the hardest things are steel, diamond and to know one's self," said Josh Crane of Daedulus, which restored the statue after it fell earlier this year due to a gust of wind. "And now we can also say well-made 19th century bronze."
A photo of Johnson Hall circa 1855-1862, which stood at Old City Hall's location. The Benjamin Franklin statue can be seen in the front.

"The statue was built in 1855 and Old City Hall was built in 1865, 10 years after the statue," said Sean O'Donnell of the Architectural Heritage Foundation. "And he's still here after falling on his head. He's back and looks great."

The location was chosen in 1855 because Franklin attended the Boston Latin School, which was located at the site before moving.
