Downtown Dreamtown -- A Public Art Exhibit Now Atop Macy's Balcony

Downtown Dreamtown, a public art installation by Elizabeth Keithline, is now installed atop the canopy of Macy's on Summer Street and will be on display through October 24, 2016.

Keithline created nine sculptural facades from architectural details such as gargoyles, windows and doors featured on Downtown buildings. The artist utilized wood, fiberglass and mesh, to create art that makes the average person stop, pause and look up at the work during the day.

At night, the work is illuminated, creating an ethereal feel that further draws attention. The nine sculptures highlight the architectural variety and beauty that is a hallmark of Downtown Boston. Keithline's distinctive process of working by hand directly on the building's faade is reminiscent of a time when buildings were still made by hand and rudimentary machines, using large amounts of skilled and unskilled craftspeople and laborers.

"Walking around Downtown Boston, I saw these buildings as some of the city's original public art installations," said Keithline, below. "I'm interested in how architects and designers perceived themselves and those for whom they designed. I love how buildings effortlessly connect current populations to the past."

Included in the installation are a re-imagination of the belfry on the Burnham Building at 10 Summer St., three gargoyles at The Corner Mall, as well as multiple windows and doors from 15 Winter St., 1 and 15 State streets, 77 Franklin St., and 125 Summer St.

Downtown Dreamtown was done in collaboration with The Druker Company, Oxford Properties Group, the Markley Group and Millennium Partners.
Millennium Partners Helping Fund
Old South Meeting House $250,000 Ceiling Restoration Project

The Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) has begun a $250,000 major restoration of the interior ceiling, funded by two grants -- one by developer Millennium Partners.

"Millennium Partners strongly believes in enriching the urban fabric in which we build, with a particular focus on historic preservation," said Kathleen MacNeil, principal at Millennium Partners and Board President of Historic Boston Inc. "Every bit of Boston's historic infrastructure has a role in what makes this a great place to live and work. Boston's Downtown Crossing and the adjacent historic Ladder District are central to Boston's attractiveness."

Millennium Partners provided a grant of $112,500 and The Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, a state program, provided a $95,000 grant. The project is planned to begin immediately and be completed by March of 2017.

The restoration of the very large ceiling is urgently needed and requires careful planning and significant funding due to historic importance. The exhibits and interior of the Old South Meeting House will be open and accessible to visitors during restoration work.
