Book Reading & Signing with Patrick Gabridge, author of 'Steering to Freedom' at Old State House on Sept. 29th

The Old State House (206 Washington St.) is hosting a book reading and signing with Patrick Gabridge, author of "Steering to Freedom" on Tuesday, September 29th at 7 pm. This is a free event.

"Steering to Freedom" is a novel based on the thrilling true story of Robert Smalls. In May 1862, Robert Smalls, a slave and ship's pilot in Charleston, South Carolina, crafts a daring plan to steal the steamship Planter and deliver it along with the crew and their families to the Union blockade. After risking his life to escape slavery, Robert faces an even more difficult challenge: convincing Abraham Lincoln to enlist black troops. Based on a true story the book tells the story of a man who becomes the first black captain of a US military ship, while struggling to navigate a path to freedom for himself, his family, and his people.
 
A 15-Minute Improv Comedy Workshop! 
Pop-Up Classes in 
Downtown Crossing Every Week 

The Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) is teaming up with the BID for a series of 15-minute crash courses every Tuesday during lunch hour in Downtown Crossing outside of Macy's (One Summer St.). On Tuesday, September 29th, come learn Improv Comedy from instructor Kelly Fey for only $5

Each class will be no more than 15 minutes in length, and only $5 or $10 (the extra $5 covers necessary class materials). Participants will receive a coupon for the amount they paid toward a future BCAE class.

Each of the following 15-minute classes will run on its scheduled date starting at 11:30 am, noon, 12:30 pm and 1 pm.

The following is the class schedule and prices:

The BID's 125 Summer Street Soloists Series is every Wednesday and Friday from noon to 2 pm through September. All performances are free and open to the public

Get to Know the Boston Camerata at the Boston Area Spanish Exchange 

The Boston Area Spanish Exchange (BASE) at 41 Winter St. is hosting two events to get to know the Boston Camerata, which will have two concerts this coming weekend. 

Anne Az�ma, the artistic director for the Boston Camerata will visit BASE to lead a brief preview of the upcoming Latin American Baroque music concerts Nueva Espa�a: Close Encounters in the New World taking place in Dorchester and Copley Place.

The BASE events will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 30th and Thursday, Oct. 1st from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Click here for more info.

Banned Books on the Big Screen: 'A Place in the Sun' at the 
Old South Meeting House

The Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) is continuing its Banned Books on the Big Screen series with "A Place in the Sun" on Thursday, Oct. 1st

This 1951 classic stars Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters, and won six Academy Awards. This book was banned in Boston and became one of the works that defined the city's battle against censorship during the 1920s. Advance tickets can be purchased here for $8, $4 for OSMH members, and tickets at the door are $10. Doors open at 6 pm and movie starts at 7 pm

New Griffin Museum Exhibit 'Nourish' at 
Lafayette City Center Passageway 

The Griffin Museum of Photography's new exhibit "Nourish" debuted at the Lafayette City Center Passageway on September 11th. "Nourish" is a free exhibition consisting of five photographers' work that is inspired by food as subject matter. 

David Weinberg, above, bridges his fascination with ancient manuscripts and fruits and vegetables; David Lancaster photographs in his kitchen using the day's simple light while preparing an evening meal; Francine Zaslow's work is about unknown foods from different cultures; Lynn Karlin shows the bounty from her Maine farm that depicts a quiet and sculptural life reminiscent of the Dutch masters; Amy Rindskopf focuses on the aftermath of a meal.

The Lafayette City Center Passageway (2 Avenue De Lafayette) links Macy's with the Hyatt Regency Boston and is open to the public 10 am to 6 pm daily. The exhibition will run through January 3rd. The exhibition is brought to the public courtesy of the Lafayette City Center, the BID and the Griffin Museum of Photography.

The Downtown Boston BID Ambassadors provide hospitality services seven days a week, nearly 24 hours a day, creating a welcoming environment for everyone. BID Ambassadors provide walking escorts all day or night - they'll even tote an umbrella if it's snowing!

Boston Fashion Week Continues This Week:  
Get Your Tickets Now

Did you miss Boston Fashion Week's opening weekend? If so, don't worry, this week's slate of events is even more exciting with fashion designers debuting their new lines, an open runway in Downtown Crossing and more! This year the BID teamed with Terri Mahn of thestylistcloset 
spending the past several months developing events that challenge everyone to think outside the box. The result is a series of curated events -- Platform Downtown at Boston Fashion Week.

THE HAND OF FASHION: Fashion Artisans on Monday, Sept. 28th at 100 Federal St. (6th Floor) at 6 pmThis event will focus on the art and craftsmanship that goes into producing a fashion garment or accessory. It will feature the work of knitwear designer Dylan Uscher, jeweler Magdalena Stokalska, fashion designers Maryanne Meservey and Chynna Pope, milliner Marie Galvin, handbag designers Shaunt Sarian and Kent Stetson and other local fashion artisans. Guests will see artists' work on display in a gallery setting while fashion artisans demonstrate their techniques and answer questions. A selection of products produced by the featured designers will be available for purchase. Ever want to show off your fashion on the runway? Here's your chance! OPEN RUNWAY in Downtown Crossing on Wednesday, Sept. 30th at noon (outside of Macy's on Summer Street) is using the same premise as an open mic night for singers or comedians. OPEN RUNWAY will provide an opportunity for budding local fashion designers to show their creations. Fashion designers at every stage of their careers (that includes student fashion designers) are invited to participate in this open air fashion show taking place in Downtown Crossing. Click here for rules and more information about how designers can show their work on the Open Runway. This is a free event. 

SMART TALK: Fashion Frontiers on Wednesday, Sept. 30th at 100 Federal St. (6th Floor) at 8 pm will focus on the new frontiers designers are exploring through their work in the fashion industry. This conversation will include designers Thom Solo,Taylor StapletonAndrew Berul and Christian Restrepo and will be moderated by Boston Fashion Week Founder Jay Calderin. Aaron's 2016 collection is a voyage of discovery, inspired by artisan crafts and exotic locals around the world with stitch-work embroidery from India and traditional Japanese cottons that create an organic mix of natural color and texture. Bring Your Pets to a Blessing of the Animals in Downtown Crossing on October 4th 

Bring your pets big and small, furry and scaled to a Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals, on Sunday, Oct. 4th. The friars of St. Anthony Shrine will bless pets at 2 pm at the intersection of Hawley and Summer streets (near Macy's)

Now Open on Winter Place 

Yvonne's now open on Winter Place, is bringing something new to something old. The restaurant just opened this past weekend and is a modern interpretation of the supper club, breathing new life into where the Locke-Ober restaurant once called home.

Yvonne's is a place that effortlessly flows from dinner and drinks to lounging and revelry, where every visit offers an ever-evolving experience that lets the night take the lead. City Launches 'Women Entrepreneurs Boston' to Support Women-Owned Bizs and a Salary Negotiation Workshop for Women 

The City of Boston announced two female-related initiatives last week to further women who own businesses and to affect the gender wage gap.

Today Mayor Marty Walsh joined the American Association of University Women in announcing there will be free salary negotiation workshops to any woman working or living in Boston. Women will be invited to participate in a two-hour long workshop.

Last week the city announced a new city initiative, Women Entrepreneurs Boston (WE BOS). This initiative will advance Boston's women entrepreneurs by providing the skills, technical assistance and network women need to launch and grow their business. To begin its work, from Oct. 12th - 16th, WE BOS will bring together leaders in Boston's entrepreneurial ecosystem to launch Boston's first-ever Women Entrepreneurs Week. City of Boston Releases Request for Proposals to Enhance City Hall Plaza, 
City Hall and 26 Court St.

The City of Boston issued a request for proposals (RFP) for designers to develop a master plan for City Hall, City Hall Plaza and 26 Court St. The result of this plan will be a vision and a road map for the operation and design improvements to those facilities.

The effort to improve City Hall Plaza by calling for a plaza partner is one of three interrelated proposals: Campus Plan RFP, Plaza Partner RFP, and Civic/Cultural Partner RFP. All share the same goal of making the plaza a more welcoming and vibrant space for residents and guests. More information about the plaza partner RFP is available here. Responses are due no later than 4 pm on October 26th.

Get Down with R&B, Soul and Funk at Vinyl Night at The Merchant on Fridays 

The Merchant (60 Franklin St.) is hosting a free Vinyl Night on Fridays this fall. 

Starting at 10 pm, DJ Panda will be spinning vinyl from the 50s, 60s, R&B, soul and funk on 45s. There is no cover and a late night menu is available.

Pop-Up Urban Apple Orchard 

For the next two Saturdays (Oct. 3rd and 10th), The Ritz-Carlton, Boston Common (10 Avery St.) is hosting a pop-up urban apple orchard that is open to guests and the public

The urban apple orchard will feature apple galettes, caramel apples, cider donuts and spiced apple cider. Farm-picked apples from Russell Orchards in Ipswich will be available for purchase. Fresh-picked apples, homemade vinegar and pressed apple cider will also be available for purchase. It is free to visit the urban apple orchard. For more info please call 617-574-7100.
