Archaeological Dig Happening in June at Old City Hall

Starting June 2nd, Boston's Archaeologist Joe Bagley is leading a dig at the open land in front of Old City Hall (41-45 School St.) at a site that could reveal amazing findings. The Old City Hall grounds show little evidence of disturbances to potential archaeological discoveries in Downtown Boston and was the former location of the Boston Latin School in the 1600s.

"It just seems like one of the incredibly rare spots in Boston that's been used once and never reused again," said
Old City Hall is a National Historic Landmark, and listed on the National Register and State Register.

The property was the former location of the 1645 Boston Latin School and was rebuilt in 1704, as well as two private homes - the Cooke family of the 17th century, and the Saltonstall family of the 18th century. There was also a 1702 home that housed the schoolmasters of the Boston Latin School, a 19th century Asa Richardson general store, a firehouse, and the possible location of the 1640s Thomas Scottow house.

There has never been an archaeological investigation within the Old City Hall property. This proposed archaeological survey hopes to produce two results: First, to identify the preservation status of known historic sites within the area of potential affect; and second, identify areas of archaeological sensitivity.

The dig will occur 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.

Congratulations to Urban College of Boston Graduates! Mayor Walsh Presents Scholarship in Honor of His Parents

The BID would like to congratulate all the graduates of the Urban College of Boston (178 Tremont St.)! The graduates received a very heartfelt speech from Boston Mayor Martin Walsh about how he went from being in detox to a state representative within 18 months.
Boston Mayor Martin Walsh tweeted, "For the 1st time in @UrbanCollegeBos history, I'm proud to present a scholarship in honor of my mother & father."
The Urban College of Boston is a two-year private higher education institution and at least 60% of its students speak English as a second language, and more than 90% work full time in addition to their studies. The average age of the student body is 39.

Walsh's speech was very well received.
Diamond McMillion, 30, received her certificate in human services administration and has one more semester to go before she gets her associate's degree. McMillion told the Boston Globe, "I think Mayor Walsh was a very appropriate speaker. His past resembles a lot of students who attend this school and his status now shows us that this isn't the end. There is hope."
