Boston Ballet's 'Thrill of Contact' Premieres on May 14th at Opera House

The Boston Ballet "Thrill of Contact" debuts on May 14th at the Boston Opera House and runs through May 24th. The show is "a striking program of precision and impressive athleticism featuring works by Balanchine, Robbins, Forsythe and a world premiere by Principal Dancer Jeffrey Cirio." 

On Friday, May 15th there is a post-performance chat with Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen to hear his insights on the evening's program. On Saturday, May 23rd there is a pre-curtain talk with dancers, choreographers, musicians, and special guests offering audience members an insiders view on the story-line, choreography, history, costumes, and music for the evening's performance.

Tonight: Public Meeting About Proposed Congress Square Development  

The Boston Redevelopment Authority is leading a public meeting about the proposed redevelopment of Congress Square on Monday, May 11th. This meeting is taking place at Boston City Hall, BRA Board Room, 9th Floor, from 6 to 7:30 pm

The Congress Square block is located between Walter Street, Devonshire Street and Quaker Lane. The development team has proposed renovation and expansion of the existing 330,000 sq. ft. office buildings into a renewed mixed-use site including 284,600 sq. ft. of office space, an 85,000 sq. ft. hotel, 51,350 sq. ft. of residential space, and 36,650 sq. ft. of retail space. The development plans to transform Quaker Lane into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, retail-filled arcade. The Redcoats are in Downtown Boston! Watch the Changing of the Guard in the Crossing, at the State House and More

The Downtown Boston BID and the Freedom Trail Foundation are bringing history to life in Boston! See the Redcoats changing the guard, as well colonists and British soldiers interacting like it was in 1775. 


These exciting and entertaining activities will pop-up in unexpected places throughout the BID area on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 2 pm.

Listen as the military drummer accompanies soldiers to their posts and the soldiers complete inspections while marching to their next post. Meet and engage with 18th-century figures and talk with them about life in Boston's early years. The Redcoats will be in downtown streets from May to October. 
You're Invited! Greenway Echelman Sculpture Grand Opening on May 11th 

The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy is inviting the public to a grand celebration of the unveiling of the Greenway Echelman sculpture (image below) on Monday, May 11th from 7 to 9 pm

Click here to learn 10 Things about the Echelman Sculpture on the Greenway including how the sculpture was installed and is being supported by ropes from nearby buildings will suspend the sculpture and the process of hoisting the sculpture.

The unveiling will occur on the Greenway between Pearl and Oliver streets across from 510 Atlantic Ave. There will be musical performances, activities and more. The rain date is May 12th from 7 to 9 pm.
Free Berklee College of Music Performance Series at 100 Summer St. Madeline Rae May 12th & 14th 

The Berklee College of Music Summer Concert Series continues this week with Madeline Rae on May 12th and 14th from noon to 2 pm. These performances are free and open to the public.

Madeline Rae is a Boston-based singer-songwriter originally from Chicago. Rae grew up with strong classic and Southern rock influences.

This is the second year of the free Berklee concert series at 100 Summer St.
Actors' Shakespeare Project Performing 'Henry VI, Part 2' May 13th thru June 7th at Modern Theatre

The Actors' Shakespeare Project is performing "Henry VI, Part 2" at Suffolk University's Modern Theatre starting May 13th through June 7th

The Henry VI plays were popular back in the day, "...because they were packed with conspiratorial machinations unfolding right in front of you in an irresistible feast of intrigue."

Boston Calling Block Party in Dewey Square Park May 14th 

The Boston Calling Block Party is back in Dewey Square (Congress and Summer streets) on Thursday, May 14th with The Almighty Buck performing live. Thursday's block party is from 5 to 8:30 pm.

On Thursday nights there will be block parties in Dewey Square through September.

There will be block parties in Downtown Crossing with a stage between Macy's and Roche Bros. on the first Wednesday of every month through September. All block parties are free 21+ events to be inside the gated areas, but anyone can stand nearby and listen. Beer and wine is available for purchase.

Flash Forward Boston: [Photo]gogues: New England (Part 3) at Lafayette City Center Passageway Thru May 15th

Flash Forward Boston is a 10-day festival of international and New England photography in Boston. Through May 15th, the exhibit "Photo]gogues: New England (Part 3)" will be on display for free at the Lafayette City Center Passageway

The exhibition "is not a definitive study of New England Photography Pedagogues, rather it is a sampling of faculty members from the region." Paula Tognarelli and Frances Jakubek, executive director and associate director of the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, MA, invited 10 photography instructors to exhibit their work during the Flash Forward Photography Festival 2015 in Boston.

 

The exhibition is open to the public 10 am - 9 pm Monday to Thursday, 10 am - 9:30 pm Friday and Saturday, and 10 am - 9 pm on Sunday. The Lafayette City Center Passageway links Macy's with the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 2 Avenue De Lafayette.

Rory Cuddyer, Boston's 'Startup Czar' & BID Board Member Speaking at Boston Youth Entrepreneurs Event on May 19th

Rory Cuddyer, Boston's "Startup Czar" and BID board member, is speaking at the DCU Center of Excellence in Fintech on May 19th. This is a Boston Young Entrepreneurs event, which is a collaboration between Workbar and ONEin3 Boston.

 
As "Startup Czar" Cuddyer is a liaison to the startup community while representing the community's needs in City Hall. This event is taking place at the DCU Center (695 Atlantic Ave.) at 6 pm. Click here for tickets. 
King's Chapel Sunday Forum: Daniel McKanan, Ralph Waldo Emerson Senior Lecturer on May 17th

King's Chapel presents a Sunday Forum with Dr. Daniel McKanan, Ralph Waldo Emerson Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Divinity School on May 17th at 12:30 pm

This lecture will examine the roots of Unitarianism in Europe and the evolution of religious tolerance and reason in faith and practice. How King's Chapel adopted Christian Unitarian theology and its contribution to religious thought and post-colonial independence will also be examined, together with how this identity has been sustained as American Unitarianism has expanded outside the Christian faith.

Irish International Immigrant Center's Black and Green of Boston Event on 
May 17th 

The Irish International Immigrant Center (100 Franklin St.) and the Montserrat Aspirers are hosting its annual Black and Green of Boston event. This year's event is called One Boston: Celebrating Unity and Boston's Diversity on Sunday, May 17th with Boston's first ever Chief Diversity Officer Shaun Blugh as the guest speaker. 

There will be performances by Zumix, OrigiNation, Inc., the Heavey Quinn Academy of Irish Dance, and Jamele Adams. This event is being held at Medicine Wheels Production (110 K St. 2nd Floor, Boston) from 2 to 5 pm. Admission is a donation of $10, and free to children 12 and younger. PAUL Bakery Opens on Washington Street with Red Carpet Ribbon Cutting! 

Iconic French bakery PAUL brought red carpet style and class to their ribbon cutting on Thursday night before opening to the public today.

Established in Lille, France in 1889, PAUL is a 125-year-old family-owned bakery that has passed down its bread-baking "savoir faire" for five generations. And now PAUL is open on the ground floor of the BNY Mellon Center at One Boston Place.

"We are thrilled to open Le Restaurant de PAUL in Boston's booming Downtown Crossing neighborhood," said Philippe Sanchez, President & CEO of Paul USA. "For the first time in the US, Le Restaurant de PAUL offers a full-service restaurant with an extensive menu of classic French cuisine fares reminiscent of what our parents served in our family's dining room when we were children."

 

"It is not just a bakery," said Rosemarie Sansone, President of the Downtown Boston BID. "It's an authentic French restaurant put together with French passion."

Some of the full-service offerings include seared short ribs with morel mushroom sauce and French green beans, pictured above, and turbot with saut�ed leeks, puff pastry and lobster sauce.

 

There is also a more casual seating section where patrons can order croissants, sandwiches or salads from cashiers at the main bakery case and sit down for a quick meal. Alongside the expansive bakery case is a coffee and juice bar for patrons to pick up made-to-order Lavazza coffee or a fresh-squeezed juice drink.

 

PAUL also offers catering for breakfast and lunch to offices and stores. PAUL is located at 201 Washington St., and can be reached at 617-725-2713. Initial hours are Monday to Friday 7 am to 3 pm this week. 

Painting, Mulching and More: Downtown Boston Businesses Pitch in for 
Boston Shines 

On Friday Downtown Boston area businesses got their hands dirty volunteering for the City of Boston's annual Boston Shines neighborhood cleanup.  
Employees of peerTransfer painted planters at the corner of Chapman Place and School Street. They were joined by Riley the dog.

"Boston Shines provided a great opportunity for peerTransfer to give back to the community and spend some quality time together as a company," said Claire Ferrante. "It was nice to be part of a day dedicated to cleaning up the Downtown Crossing neighborhood where members of our team work and live."


Thank you to all the companies who had employees donate their time to volunteer. And a special thank you to Capital One 360 Cafe for donating coffee (iced and hot!) for all volunteers. 
Employees from The Ritz-Carlton painted tree wells at the China Trade Center. 
The BID identified projects for volunteers to perform such as painting tree wells at the China Trade Center, mulching the plant area outside of 125 Summer St., and painting electrical boxes.

Also, the Bull Radio Show will be live on May 21st outside the supermarket on Summer Street. Dalton & The Sheriffs will perform a free and open to the public concert on June 4th from 5 to 7 pm

The Downtown Boston BID Ambassadors provide hospitality services seven days a week, nearly 24 hours a day, creating a welcoming environment for everyone. BID Ambassadors provide walking escorts all day or night - they'll even tote an umbrella if it's snowing!
