Norman B. Leventhal, 1917-2015:
A Giant Of Downtown Revitalization

The tomb of architect Christopher Wren, in London's
St. Paul's Cathedral, is inscribed: "reader, if you seek his monument, look around you." The same could be said for Norman B. Leventhal, who passed away yesterday.

Imagine yourself in award-winning Norman B. Leventhal Park in Post Office Square. Look north and you will glimpse his 75 State Street development. Look east and you will see his Langham Hotel (formerly Le Meridien). Just north, in Government Center, stands his Center Plaza; a little further east rises his Rowes Wharf complex.

If you walk two blocks north to State Street, you be able to take in the Norman B. Leventhal Walk To The Sea, a captivating series of signs and markers explaining State Street's significance in Boston history. Finally, there is his signature achievement: the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library, which exhibits, archives, and provides an educational curriculum on a dazzling array of colonial-era Boston maps.

It is impossible to overstate the rich and generous legacy that Norman B. Leventhal bequeathed to our city. We deeply mourn his passing and are forever grateful for his many lasting contributions to the community.
Opening Day: When Downtown Crossing
Was A Hub Of Baseball Excitement

Red Sox Opening Day is upon us! The Sox begin their regular season today in Philadelphia vs. the Phillies. They inaugurate their 103rd season at hallowed Fenway Park next Monday, April 13th, vs. the Washington Nationals.

For years, Downtown Crossing buzzed with Red Sox-related excitement. Why? Because this was the site of Boston's Newspaper Row. Six newspapers were all published on a crowded stretch of Washington Street between Old South Meeting House and Old State House.

From 1940-60, there was no greater subject for a Boston newspaper column than Red Sox star slugger Ted Williams (above). Young, handsome, talented, arrogant, sensitive, and talkative, Ted was a sportswriter's dream. Combine that with the era's cutthroat "newspaper war," and you had all the ingredients for a memorable atmosphere. People would linger on Newspaper Row, eager to devour the latest anti-Williams columns. The end of Williams' career coincided with the demise of Newspaper Row, as, by 1960, the remaining newspapers had all collapsed or moved away.

The Downtown Boston BID salutes the memory of Newspaper Row--and welcomes the start of another Red Sox season. Play ball!

Now through April 15th--the date selected by the City of Boston as the new "One Boston" commemoration day--the Hyatt is collecting new and gently-worn sneakers on behalf of St. Francis House. Shoe donations can be made by dropping-off pairs in the main lobby of the Hyatt Regency.

The BID Celebrates Four Years of
Ambassador Services!

The Downtown Boston BID recently celebrated the four-year anniversary of our Clean and Hospitality Ambassadors who create a welcoming feeling while improving the streets of Downtown Boston.

BID Ambassadors enjoyed cake and frozen yogurt and received certificates commemorating their time employed at the BID. Several ambassadors have been with the BID since the ambassador program began four years ago.

"Year after year, seeing the changes taking place, and to be out there working, you have the opportunity to see the most incredible things - Patriots, Bruins, and Red Sox victory parades, cancer walks, and more..." said Steve Brookes, Clean & Hospitality Operations Manager for the BID.

From spring 2011 through the end of 2014, BID Ambassadors have removed over 504,000 pounds of litter from public areas; washed away nearly 3,200 graffiti tags; peeled-off over 6,200 stickers plastered on signs, etc.; and have cleaned downtown's Big Belly trash/recycling receptacles almost exactly 60,000 times.

A.W. Perry President and BID Chairman Jack Spurr
and BID President Rosemarie E. Sansone thank
BID Clean & Hospitality Operations Manager Steve Brookes
for his years of service.

BID Ambassadors have also returned more than $15,000 in lost checks, helped countless people relocate their parked cars, changed dozens of flat tires, jump-started an equal number of dead batteries--and  have even returned a missing dog to its grateful Beacon Hill owner!

If you have a story of a time a Downtown Boston BID Ambassador has helped you or a friend, colleague, or family member, please email your account to [email protected]. BID Ambassadors are at work in the BID area seven days a week, nearly 24 hours a day; please call 617-261-0066 for more info.

Boston Public School students are hired each summer by more than 300 Boston businesses. To hire a student or learn more about summer jobs, please click here. The chart below shows how much it costs to hire a student.

Most jobs start on the first Monday after July 4th, though graduating seniors are available earlier. Most programs end in the last full week of August. Many students are also available and willing to continue working on a part-time basis into the school year.

The PIC can help you coordinate interviews so you can select the student who best meets your needs.
