Witness a Reenactment of the Boston Tea Party on its 241st Anniversary

December 16th will be the 241st anniversary of the Boston Tea Party and tea must be spilled! Gather for a reenactment at the Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) where the colonists met in 1773 with colonial agitators John Hancock and Paul Revere - and some crown-loving Loyalists - to debate the tea tax and demand liberty from the British crown.

Then join a procession to Griffin's Wharf accompanied by fife and drum. Line the shores of the Boston Harbor to witness the destruction of the tea as the Sons of Liberty storm the Brig Beaver, tossing the tea into the water below. This event is from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. BID Set To Debut 'Night Lights'
As It Continues To Light Up Downtown

'Night Lights,' a holiday-themed light show of projected images and coordinated music, will debut later this week at the plaza in front of the Walgreens emporium, at the corner of School & Washington Streets. The 'Night Lights' show will run daily from 4:30-8:30 pm (alternating sets every half-hour) through New Year's Eve. Free to the public, this new display, developed by Port Lighting Systems, is the final piece to the Downtown Boston BID's holiday illumination program.

"We partnered with as many of our property owners as possible this year and worked on illuminating 'gateway' entrances to the district," said Rosemarie Sansone, President of the Downtown Boston BID. "We wanted to build upon the already-exciting Macy's holiday tree-lighting event, which traditionally kicks off the holiday season in Downtown Boston, by creating new memories in downtown, and we hope to grow this program in the years to come."

In addition to lighting nearly 100 trees throughout the district--which will stay lit through the end of March--the BID partnered with Boston Properties, CBRE, Equity Office Properties, Friends of Post Office Square, Harwood Properties, and Oxford Properties, to create special illuminated displays to welcome, brighten, and celebrate the holidays. Snowflakes dance, colors swirl, and trees turn a variety of shades at One Boston Place, 100 Federal Street, Post Office Square Park & Garage, Pi Alley Garage, 100 Summer Street, and 125 Summer Street.

Join the BID later this week in celebrating the launch of 'Night Lights,' and remember to check out all of the great holiday illuminations that are making downtown all aglow!
Mayor Walsh and Boston Bruin David Krejci Kickoff Annual Mayor's Coat Drive at Macy's

Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Boston Bruin David Krejci kicked off the Mayor's Annual Coat Drive on Tuesday, Dec. 9th at the Downtown Boston Macy's by giving 100 coats to children from Boston community centers.
"This one looks like it's got your name on it," remarked Walsh while fitting a young girl. Macy's donated 100 coats to the drive, which were given to kids from seven Boston Centers for Youth & Families community centers. The kids enjoyed receiving the coats, and really enjoyed meeting Mayor Walsh and Krejci.

Like Walsh, Krejci helped the kids find the right coat for them. For more information on how you can help out at the Boston Centers for Youth & Families, please contact 617-635-4920. Click here for more pictures from the event.
Emerson College Students 'Stage' Unique Downtown Light Rover Display

A creative Light Rover display lit up the Downtown Crossing area on Dec. 11th with help from Emerson College performing arts students and faculty. Utilizing the BID's Light Rover, the students highlighted three downtown buildings with exceptional architectural features: Tremont Temple Baptist Church (88 Tremont St.), with its intricately-patterned late 19th-century facade, 45 Milk St., with features ornate Beaux Arts-era statuary carved into its facade, and 100 Federal St., with the iconic "bulge" in its middle section. Music from local artists played as the holiday-themed light show was projected onto buildings.

Students Sean Pieroth and Steven Wilkinson, supervised by Performing Arts faculty members David Colfer and Scott Pinkneyhelped design the lighting program for the Light Rover. "It looks really good on our part and it's a really cool project," said Pieroth.

"This is a great partnership with Emerson College and the BID," said Anita Lauricella, project manager for the BID, who helped coordinate the light display. "This project allowed the students to use the skills they've learned in the classroom. And it helps the BID build a more vibrant and welcoming district."

An Older Time Capsule Found At The "New" State House

A time capsule believed to date back to 1795 was recently found embedded within the Massachusetts State House. A copper alloy box, below, was undamaged when recovered. Former Massachusetts Governor Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and William Scollay originally placed the contents in the time capsule.

The time capsule was originally unearthed in 1855 during emergency repairs to the State House and was then reburied. The capsule allegedly includes a collection of silver and copper coins dating from between 1652 and 1855; an engraved silver plate; newspapers, and more, according to the Boston Globe. The copper box was escorted by State Police escort to the Museum of Fine Arts, where it will be x-rayed to determine the contents.

This is the second time capsule to be unearthed from a stop along the Freedom Trail in recent months. A time capsule from 1901 was discovered inside the lion that sits atop the Old State House in October.

Fun fact: The current State House (24 Beacon St.) or "new" State House was built in 1798. The Old State House (206 Washington St.) was built in 1718.
