MAST' Opens on Province Street Combining a Twist of Old World Europe and Boston

MAST' (45 Province St.) opened this weekend, and even before opening it had generated great fanfare with previews from Zagat Boston and other media outlets.

"MAST' draws upon our culinary experiences in the inspirational cities of Naples, Palermo, and of course Boston," said co-owner John DeSimone, below far right. "We want to bring to the neighborhood the kind of place where a grand salumi plate may end up on the same table as locally harvested oysters, or handmade semolina pappardelle."

"We're melding classic and contemporary flavors, using only the freshest ingredients from New England's farms and fisheries," said co-owner Marco Caputo, above, middle, with fellow co-owner Anthony DePinto, above left. "Our pizza oven and pizza maker were both flown in from Naples, Italy, so expect the best authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizza around."

And if you're wondering about the apostrophe at the end of the new Italian trattoria's name, it derives from the Neapolitan slang term "O'mast," which means "the master of one's craft." The restaurant features a giant pizza oven, a Scotch locker on the bottom floor, and a very talented chef who can make pizza that look like people, like Red Sox Mike Napoli, above.
