Time Capsule Found in the Head of the Lion from the Old State House

Boston Society historians confirmed that the lion taken down from the Old State House DOES have a time capsule in its head - and now a plan is being worked on to remove the time capsule. And after that - what should our modern historians put in a new time capsule??

The lion and unicorn normally atop the Old State House (206 Washington St.), were removed this month to be restored by Bob Shure of Skylight Studios. He confirmed the time capsule was in the lion's crown.  A Tuesday meeting will determine the removal schedule, and planning for a small ceremony in the first full week of October to open the shoebox-sized capsule.

A 1901 article from the Boston Daily Globe alerted historians of the possibility of the time capsule.

Another question has arisen - what should be put in a new time capsule when the lion is put back atop its perch?
The Bostonian Society is accepting ideas from the public about what to place inside the time capsule. Suggestions are welcome and can be sent to the Bostonian Society at [email protected], or by using the hashtag #LionandUnicorn on Twitter.

New Downtown Boston Maps Debut in Information Panels

Ten new maps, part of a BID pilot program, were installed in JCDecaux city information panels across the Downtown Boston BID on Monday making it easier for residents and visitors to find their way.

Above: Jack Rippin, mechanical technician, and Camille Edwards, operations coordinator of JCDecaux North America, on Washington Street after a map was installed.

"The new maps should be more helpful as they show where you are located when facing the map so you don't need to reposition yourself," said Anita Lauricella, BID Project Manager. "These maps also provide an additional navigation tool allowing users to estimate the time to desired destinations."

The new maps have been placed in prime tourist locations throughout the district including several spots on Washington Street, as well as on Avenue De Lafayette, School Street, and Franklin Street.

Take a look and let us know what you think by emailing feedback to the BID at [email protected].
