Please Help Our Friends at The Boston Landmarks Orchestra

Inclement weather on almost every Wednesday this summer forced the Boston Landmarks Orchestra to cancel four of their Hatch Shell concerts. The cancelled concerts put a dent into the usual donations for the orchestra, which usually raise around $10,000 per season, but this year only $2,500 was received, which didn't even cover the orchestra's costs.

New Vendor Kiosks Now On Downtown Boston Streets

The Downtown Boston BID launched our new vendor kiosk pilot program this past week with five free-standing retail merchandising units (RMUs) on Washington Street and by the Old State House. Unlike mobile pushcarts, the RMUs are attached to the ground and stay out overnight after being locked up.

"I think the RMUs are wonderful. I love playing a small part in the revitalization of Downtown Boston," said Edna Accardo-Walls, above, who is selling college memorabilia. Accardo-Walls has been in the downtown vendor program for more than two decades, and said she's excited for the new kiosks.

"We asked vendors to come up with something they are passionate about, but also New England-themed goods that are fun and different that appeal to residents, office workers, and tourists," Kristen Flanagan, Project Manager for the vendor program.

"I think they are great. I love that I don't have to roll it out and set up every day from scratch," said Craig Caplan, above, at his new kiosk in front of One State Street
which is selling Boston souvenir bags, hats, key chains, magnets, and more. Caplan has been a Downtown Boston vendor since 1992, and he and his partner, Melissa Charney, are very excited about the new kiosks. "It's upscale," added Caplan, whose other RMU is selling Boston team t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats, in front of the Walgreens Emporium. "There's been a very positive response with people saying how great they look!"

"I think it's great. The area has been updating and developing. We needed to bring the kiosks to that level and have," said Elben Guimaraes, pictured above, who is leasing two RMUs with his partner Luis Hornos. Their RMUs are in front of the Old South Meeting House and selling soaps, shower gels, foot mist and more at one, and nautical-themed items at the second RMU.
