Color Crossing Transforms Music Hall Alley Into a Place to Envision the Past and Future of Downtown Crossing

The Color Crossing public art display has transformed Music Hall Alley (Winter Street entrance to The Corner Mall) from an ordinary alley into a portal to the present by illustrating people's desire to travel to the past and future!

Created by artist Kate Gilbert, above, Color Crossing is part of an initiative to activate 25+ alleys and other spaces within the downtown area. This temporary art installation (it comes down at the end of October) uses color and sound to represent the layers of history and the diversity of the people who frequent Downtown Crossing. It is both a design intervention and a piece of public storytelling, said Gilbert. A complimentary audio component comprised of field recordings, on-site interviews and original music created by sound artist Halsey Burgund is playing in the alley. Click here for more about Color Crossing.

"Art releases expression, especially from the artist," said local artist Ira Jones, above left, with Gilbert, who stopped by the alley while Gilbert was working on Color Crossing. "Because it's not dark, it leaves you open to stop and stare, and I don't usually stop and stare at too much stuff. As long as you have colors that pop, you're always gonna catch the viewer."

Color Crossing is funded by the Downtown Boston BID, with special thanks to 3MJ Realty and The Druker Company for use of their properties.
Testing 1, 2, 3... BID Light Rover Riding Through Downtown Streets

The Downtown Boston BID has a new toy - a Light Rover! The Light Rover's mission is to highlight the city, as it did with the purple and pink lighting against the Dewey Square mural at Thursday's Boston Calling Block Party, pictured below.

The Light Rover was created by artist Ross Miller, and features seven projectable LED multi-colored lights. The electronic components are powered by battery, and is driven by two bicyclists, seen below. The rover is currently being tested for functionality, so you'll be seeing it around the streets of Downtown Boston.

The Light Rover will be used to promote events, businesses, architecture and more! Got an idea for what the Light Rover should highlight - please email info@bostonbid.org.
