First Downtown Boston Elementary School in 15 Years Now Open

The Torit Language Center Montessori began its first day of elementary school on September 2nd - making it the first new elementary school in the area in more than a decade!

Above: Students participate in a reading circle on the first day of school at the Torit Language Center Montessori Elementary Schoool. The school is located at 41 Bromfield St. The elementary school goes up to third grade.

Kristen Mansharamani, founder of the school, said the school could be an alternative for parents who work downtown, instead of schools in the suburbs. Mansharamani said a parent who works in the downtown area could commute with their child to the school, and be able to spend more time with their child instead of putting them on a bus.

The Torit Language Center Montessori opened in 2008 at 45 Province St., and has 85 children in its early childhood program (infant through kindergarten), so having an elementary school was a natural extension for the school. Click here for more information about the school.
Old State House Lion, Unicorn, and More Being Restored

Don't be alarmed by the scaffolding at the Old State House in the coming weeks. The oldest surviving public building in the country started a major restoration on August 30th that will include the iconic lion and unicorn statues on the east facade of the building.

The Bostonian Society is leading the restoration work of the two statues, which includes lowering the statues by crane, and transporting them to a conservator's studio. The statues will be resurfaced with palladium and gold leaf. The two animals are from Great Britain's royal coat of arms. The unicorn symbolizes Scotland and the lion represents England. The project will also include roofing and window repairs, and repointing of the masonry on the west facade. The Old State House is located at 206 Washington St.
