Fajitas & 'Ritas Hosting Cinco De Mayo Block Party on May 3rd

Fajitas & 'Ritas is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a Cinco de Mayo block party. Cinco de Mayo is the joyous Mexican festival which commemorates Mexico's victory against the French in the Battle of Puebla.
 
On Saturday, May 3rdFajitas & 'Ritas (25 West St.) owner Bradley Fredericks will toast the restaurant's 25th anniversary with a Cinco de Mayo-themed West Street Block Party. The party will take

Have You Bought Your Tickets Yet for 'Downtown: Home Where the Heart Is' Tour on May 10th?

Tickets are now available to be purchased online for the Downtown Boston BID's second-annual "Downtown: Home Where The Heart Is" Home Tour, which is taking place on Saturday, May 10th, from 11 am-3 pm.

Featuring a variety of homes, this self-guided tour will showcase all the amenities downtown has to offer and highlight why people love living downtown. Click here to purchase tickets for $25 and to learn more about the tour.
BPA Preservation Achievement Awards: Nominations Due April 30th 

Have you been admiring a development or project you think should be recognized for its "contribution to Boston's built environment?" Then nominate it for the Boston Preservation Alliance's Preservation Achievement Award!

To be eligible, projects must have been completed in 2013. Only Boston projects (such as the Modern Theatre, pictured above, which was an award recipient in 2011) will be considered. Nominations will be accepted through April 30. The awards ceremony and reception will be held this fall.

Call to Artists and Crafters for Summer Street Arts & Crafts Market 

Calling all artists and crafters! The Downtown Boston BID's Summer Street Arts and Crafts Market is returning on Wednesdays and Fridays from May 2 through October 24. The BID is looking forward to the market's continued success at its new location, 125 Summer Street Plaza.   

Artwork must be original and handmade by the artist or artist's studio or enterprise. No mass-produced or imported goods are allowed. Artists and crafters are responsible for their own display materials and must provide their own white 10' x 10' pop-up tent.

Suffolk University Center for Real Estate Hosting Development Seminar    

 

Stay on top of the latest trends and practices in the world of real estate with Suffolk University's Center for Real Estate 6-Week Professional Development Program. The Center's first educational seminar is "Anatomy of a Real Estate Development Project: 20 Somerset St."    

Using Suffolk University's $62 million development project at 20 Somerset St. (pictured above), you will learn how a real estate project is organized and executed. Topics include: acquisition, permitting and approvals, market analysis, construction, community relations, design and financing. This program is geared towards architects, lawyers, consultants, lenders, brokers, construction managers, property managers, university and healthcare facility planners, and others interested in the public and private development process.

    

Registration costs vary from $475 to $595. This program will take place on six consecutive Wednesday sessions from May 21st to June 25th from 6 to 8:30 pm. Click here for more information and to register.

Primark to Open Four Floor Department Store in Burnham Building 

Primark, the Ireland-based clothing retailer, has signed a lease for their first American store to open in the Burnham Building in late 2015.
 
"No other retailer in the world suits this location better than Primark. It is a great privilege to be able to bring them to Boston," said Christopher Jeffries, founding partner of Millennium Partners, developer for the project.
 
Launched in 1969, the fashion retailer is one of the largest clothing retailers in Europe, and will occupy four floors and 112,000 sq. ft. at the site of the old Filene's Basement store. 
May to Kick Off Return of Outdoor Markets, Block Parties & New Berklee College of Music Performances Series    

There will be plenty of free entertainment sponsored by the Downtown Boston BID this spring and summer. 

Two popular events returning this summer with two new locations due to Summer Street construction, are the Summer Street Market (pictured above) and the Boston Calling Block Party Series. The market starts Friday, May 2nd, at 125 Summer St., featuring original handmade artwork for sale from 11 am to 6 pm on Wednesdays and FridaysThe block party series is every Thursday, starting May 8th, from 5 to 8 pm. This year's series will be co-hosted by Crashline Productionsthe Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, and the Downtown Boston BID. The block parties feature live DJs or bands with beer and wine being served. The block party is a 21+ event.  
"We look forward to greeting our loyal fans at this convenient and fun location," said Rosemarie Sansone, President of the Downtown Boston BID. "For the past five years, Downtown Boston's young and old have met on Summer Street to enjoy the Block Parties [pictured above], and now they will be able to do so at Dewey Square-an ideal venue for these safe, entertaining, and wildly successful evenings."  

Brand new this year is the Berklee Performances Series featuring bands from the Berklee College of Music. Performances are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 100 Summer St., from noon to 2 pm. Maria Suetina kicks off the series on May 6th and 8th, with the Luis D'Elias Trio performing on May 13th and 15th.

Possible Record-Setting Concrete Foundation Slab Poured for Millennium Tower  

Goodbye Filene's Basement hole - hello Millennium Tower! This past Saturday, the concrete foundation was poured for the construction of the Millennium Tower. 

6,000-yard slab was poured "to hold the whole structure of the building," said Anthony Frias of S&F Concrete to WCVB. "It's the biggest pour right now in Boston, I believe, that's ever been done."

 

The slab has a thickness ranging from 6.5 feet to 9.5 feet, which took all weekend long to pour. When completed Millennium Tower will be Boston's tallest residential skyscraper at 625 feet and 60 stories. The building will open in 2016.

Flash Forward Photography Festival on April 30th to May 15th

The Flash Forward Photography Festival (April 30th - May 15th) is based out of the Fairmont Battery Wharf. The festival offers an in-depth experience through organized networking events and educational programming that brings internationally respected industry professionals together to share their knowledge.  

 

Opening Thursday, May 1, the Downtown Boston BID hosts a unique exhibit titled "[Photo]gogues: New England (Part 2)" at the Lafayette City Center Hallway (2 Avenue de Lafayette). This exhibit is free and open to the public. This is the first year that the Downtown Boston BID will be taking part in the festival.

 

On Wednesday, April 30th, Petit Robert Central (101 Arch St.) is hosting a Flash Forward event "20/20 event with the Boreal Collective" from 7 to 9 pm

Annual Boston Shines Clean-Up
on May 9th: Volunteers Wanted


The City of Boston's annual Boston Shines neighborhood clean-up day will take place in downtown on Friday, May 9th, from 8 am-12 pm. As in years past, the Downtown Boston BID hosts the downtown Boston Shines. This year's event will target specific public spaces in downtown -- Winthrop Square, the Kingston-Bedford traffic island, the Irish Famine Memorial in Reader's Park, and more.

'Gladiator' & 'Ben Hur' Next in AMC Classic Series 

See the semi-historical movie "Gladiator," which won Russell Crowe an Oscar award for best actor, as part of the AMC Loews Boston Common Cinema's Classic Series.
 
"Gladiator" is being shown on April 30th at 2 and 7 pm. The next movie in the series is "Ben-Hur" being shown on May 4th and 7th.

BID Ambassadors provide walking escorts all day or night -- they'll even tote an umbrella if it's raining! Masonry Special Projects Ambassador
Wanted For Downtown Boston BID 

The Downtown Boston BID is seeking a Masonry Special Projects Ambassador. This Ambassador will be primarily responsible for repairs needed throughout the downtown district.    

 
Duties include: making small concrete repairs and brick replacements, realigning existing brick sidewalks, and engaging as many visitors as possible. The Masonry Special Projects Ambassador will be cross-trained to provide both hospitality and clean team services in the event they are needed.
